What is the Education Studies Minor?

The Education Studies minor is designed to provide students with both theoretical knowledge and practical, hands-on experiences in the field of education. Admission Requirements and Application Process

Eligibility

Students eligible for admission to the minor will be making normal progress to the preparation for a major in the Sciences whether they have declared such a major or not. To enter the minor students must be in academic good standing with an overall grade-point average of 2.0 or better.

Application Timing

You should apply as soon as you know the Education Studies Minor is something you would like to do and will be able to complete. Eligible students must apply to the Education Studies Minor by the Spring of their third year as a first-year admit or the Spring of their first year as a transfer admit.

Application Procedure

Online Application: You need to submit an online application in spring quarter after you have met all the admission requirements.
Review Process: An Undergraduate Advisor/Counselor will review your application for completeness.
Notification: Application results will be released to students via MyUCLA Message Center on Friday of Week 3.
Plan of Study: If admitted, the student will receive the admission letter and Plan of Study form via MyUCLA Message Center. Failure to submit the Plan of Study form by the deadline will be considered a rejection of our offer of admission to the Education Studies minor.

Advising

Students must meet with the Science Education Minor Advisor to plan a coherent program to complete the minor along with their major, prior to filing a petition to enter the minor. The Ed&IS Undergraduate Advisor/Counselors see students on a drop-in basis. Students can stop by during in-person or virtual drop-in advising hours to speak with an Academic Advisor from our office. You can also send them a message via MyUCLA Message Center.

Course Requirements

General Structure

At least seven courses are included in the minor with no more than two as lower division. A minimum of 22 upper division units are required.

Education Course Enrollment

As an Education Studies Minor student, you can enroll in most Education courses during your Second Pass. Education courses on the approved list of courses for the minor will open to minor students during the second pass. If you are NOT an Education Studies Minor student and would like to take Education courses, you will have to wait until the enrollment restrictions are lifted.

Practicum Courses

Note that only one practicum (3 units) need be lab-based.

Lab-Based Practicum

To get credit for the Lab-based Practicum, you will need to be a Learning Assistant for Life Science 7L or previously 23L, Physics 5AL, 5BL, 5CL, 4AL, or 4BL. The lab-based courses offered through the Learning Assistant Program are Life Science 7L, and Physics 5AL, 5BL, 5CL, 4AL, or 4BL.

Chemistry Practicum

Students who have completed the Chem14BL, 14CL series or the 20L and 30AL series have met the prerequisites for both Chem 192A and 192B. The courses include a one-hour weekly pedagogy seminar plus assisting as a UA in either Chem 14BL or 20L labs. The date and time for the one hour pedagogy seminar and the labs where you will be a UA will be arranged around your schedule and that of the others in the class. Not all Life Science and Physics 192 courses/sections are lab-based.

Petitioning Courses

Yes, you can submit a petition to apply a course that is not on the approved list towards the minor requirement. Please note that approval of these petitions is not guaranteed approval and may be denied. To petition a course, a student will need to submit the General Petition and the full syllabus for the course. The course syllabus should include the learning objectives, the list of topics that will be covered, the assigned readings and the required assignments that must be completed. A course description will not be sufficient.

Overlap Restrictions

I am currently an Education Studies Minor Student. No. The Information and Media Literacy (IML) Minor is not open to students in the Education Studies minor.

Additional Considerations

Pass/No Pass Grading

The Chair of UCLA Food Studies and the UCLA Faculty Executive Committee have approved the request to allow minor requirements to be satisfied with a Pass or Letter Grade. This only applies to courses completed in spring 2020, the 2020-21 academic year including summer 2021, and 2021-2022 academic year, including summer 2022. For students who elect to complete a courses for Pass/No Pass (P/NP), they will satisfy the minor requirement so long as they earn a “Pass”, which is a minimum C grade. Please note that satisfactory completion of the minor does require a minimum 2.0 minor GPA.

Official Recognition

The minor in Education Studies will appear on your diploma and transcripts after your degree is conferred.

Food Studies Minor

The minor is designed to provide both theory and hands-on experiences. For instance, the food studies minor can be a nice complement to majors in chemistry, biology, communication and many more things.

Capstone Requirement

The Capstone requirement provides students in the Food Studies minor the opportunity to either put their studies into practice through internship, or complete independent research in a food related area of interest.

Internship

Direct service internships offer a hands-on opportunity to work with food related organizations. Policy internships are generally affiliated with government agencies-an example internship site includes the Los Angeles Food Policy Council. Be prepared to share a resume with possible sites. Description of internship duties from the organization (i.e. The Food Studies Graduate Student Instructor will forward the signed FOOD ST 195CE contract to the Food Studies Academic Counselor for enrollment. **International students are asked to schedule intake appointments for Week 8-10 of the quarter preceding their internship course. Domestic students are asked to schedule intake appointments for Week 0-2 of the quarter in which they will be enrolled.

Independent Research

Food Studies 199: Directed Research or Senior Project in Food Studies. Under the guidance of a faculty mentor, this independent research course gives students the opportunity to conduct independent research or create a special project related to food studies. Identifying an eligible faculty mentor is an essential step in the process. Non-Senate Faculty (NSF) may sponsor an independent research contract only with departmental approval.

Elective Courses
