Unlocking Opportunities: Understanding the Elizabeth Blackwell Scholarship Requirements
College represents a significant investment in one's future, and scholarships play a crucial role in making higher education accessible. Hobart and William Smith (HWS) Colleges offer a variety of scholarships and grants to students who demonstrate the potential to excel on their campus. Among these is the distinguished Blackwell Scholarship, named in honor of Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell, a pioneering alumna. This article delves into the requirements and aspects of the Elizabeth Blackwell Scholarship, alongside other scholarship opportunities at HWS.
Merit-Based Scholarships at Hobart and William Smith Colleges
HWS celebrates committed students through substantial scholarships and grants. Qualification for merit-based awards is determined through a holistic admissions review process and at the discretion of the Committee on Admissions. Standardized test scores are not required for any scholarship. These scholarships recognize academic excellence, leadership qualities, and a commitment to community engagement. Merit scholarships are awarded at the time of admission and can be as much as $46,000 per year. These scholarships are good for the time the student is enrolled at HWS as an undergraduate provided the scholarship recipient meets satisfactory academic progress, upholds community standards and maintains a minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA.
The Elizabeth Blackwell Scholarship: Honoring a Pioneer
The Blackwell Scholarship holds a special place among HWS's offerings. It is awarded in honor of Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell (1821-1910), an alumna from the Class of 1849. Dr. Blackwell holds the distinction of being the first woman in America to receive a Doctor of Medicine degree, making her a symbol of perseverance and breaking barriers.
The Blackwell Scholarship is specifically awarded to academically and financially deserving Geneva High School graduates to attend Hobart and William Smith. Since 1968, GSA and HWS have collaboratively invested in the Geneva community providing more than $2.3 million in direct scholarship assistance to more than 240 Geneva High School Graduates.
