Navigating the Emerson College Transcript Request Process: A Comprehensive Guide

Emerson College, renowned for its communication and arts programs, provides its students and alumni with a straightforward process for requesting transcripts and other important academic documents. This article serves as a comprehensive guide to understanding the transcript request process, along with other essential academic services offered by the college.

Accessing Emerson Resources Online

After registering for courses, students should activate their Emerson Account to access Emerson resources from anywhere, from any device, by visiting the Learn Anywhere page. Online asynchronous courses are conducted via Canvas, while online synchronous courses provide live instruction via Zoom, but also utilize Canvas for posting course materials, assignments, zoom links, and discussion boards. Students should log in to Canvas at least 24 hours before their first course starts to ensure they have access. Course content, including the syllabus, should be available for student viewing on the first official date of the course. The IT Help Desk is available to assist with any issues logging into Canvas.

Key Academic Requirements and Resources

All Emerson students, staff, and faculty are required to have an Emerson ID card to access any building on the Emerson campus. Returning students taking an in-person class do not need a new ID card. Students can drop a course via their Student Portal. For every semester of active enrollment, all Emerson College students are required to review and affirm the electronic Student Agreement, which outlines their rights and responsibilities. During the checkout process to enroll in a course, students will be asked to complete a required checkbox field to affirm their student agreement each semester they are enrolled. For semester dates, students should check the Emerson College academic calendar. Grades are available at the end of the semester and will be accessible under "My Enrollment History" via the Student Portal.

Ordering Transcripts and Enrollment Verifications

To order digital or paper transcripts or to request enrollment verification, students and alumni can visit the Certifications and Transcripts page of the Registrar's Office. Emerson College uses a third-party, Parchment Transcript Services (parchment.com) for transcript orders for Emerson College and Marlboro College students and alumni. The transcript order form must be completed through Parchment. Electronic transcripts cost $6.00 each, while hard-copy transcripts cost $8.50 each. The order form provides pricing on expedited shipping for hard-copy transcripts. Marlboro students should select "Yes" when the order form asks if they attended Marlboro. The status of an order can be checked at any time through Parchment. Once authorized and approved, please allow 3-5 business days for paper hard-copy transcripts and 20-30 minutes for electronic/PDF Emerson College transcripts to be received. Students who attended Emerson before 1982 should allow 1-2 additional days for both hard-copy and electronic transcript processing.

Current students can view their unofficial transcript via the myEmerson app under "View an Unofficial Transcript". Unofficial transcripts contain the same information as official transcripts but are not accepted by academic institutions. Unofficial transcripts are not available to alumni.

Employers and third parties should request enrollment and degree verifications through the National Student Clearinghouse. Downloadable enrollment verifications may be obtained from myEmerson after classes are in session, certifying whether a student is enrolled full-time, half-time, or less than half-time for either the current semester or for all of the semesters that they have attended. Before a semester starts, students can request pre-registration verifications on College letterhead by sending a written request to registrar [at] emerson.edu (registrar[at]emerson[dot]edu). These letters do not verify enrollment and can only indicate intention to be enrolled in the upcoming semester.

Additional Academic Services

Students transferring to another school generally need to submit a "Transfer College Report" or "Dean’s Report." Students should complete their applicant information prior to sending to registrar [at] emerson.edu (registrar[at]emerson[dot]edu) and include the recipient's contact information. The Registrar's Office will fill out academic information, and Student Life will fill out disciplinary information and send the report to its final destination. This process takes 5-7 business days as multiple offices are involved. Students who need the Common Application "Midterm Report" completed should work with their current faculty instructors to complete this form. The Registrar’s Office does not complete or submit this form for students. Third-party enrollment verification forms, which require the school seal, must be submitted directly to the Registrar’s Office for processing, including the intended recipient or if the documents should be held for pick-up.

Replacement Diplomas and Apostilles

Emerson offers a Replacement Diploma Request Form for alumni who need to replace their original diploma. Apostille requests, which are government certifications for documents needed outside of the United States, are completed by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The process can take up to four weeks from the date all necessary materials are received. Requirements include a bank check made payable to "The Commonwealth of Massachusetts" in the amount of US$6.00 per document to be certified, a self-addressed, stamped 8.5" x 11" envelope for the MA State House to return the documents, and any additional documents that need to be certified.

Information for International Students

International students are welcome to enroll in online non-credit courses. However, Emerson College is not authorized to issue I-20’s for study in its non-credit courses. Enrollment in a non-credit course may be permissible or may result in an immigration status violation depending on an international student’s immigration status and personal circumstances. Maintaining valid immigration status while in the United States is the responsibility of the individual, not Emerson College. Staff cannot advise individuals about their immigration status.

Tax Information

Per IRS guidelines, 1098-T tax documents are issued only to students who have completed credit-bearing courses (undergraduate or graduate credit). Students may provide their receipt to their tax professional to determine eligibility to claim these expenses for their taxes. Emerson College is not a tax advisor and cannot provide tax advice, so students should always consult the IRS or a tax professional.

Name Changes

In addition to a legal name, Emerson maintains an optional preferred first name. Students can change their preferred name under General Self Service > Personal Information. Faculty and Staff must update their names in Workday. A legal name is used where legally required or by business necessity, including but not limited to transcripts, insurance claims, medical records, immigration information, passport/visa/immigration documents, tax forms and loan documents. Students who wish to change their legal name on file with the college must provide documentation of their new legal name to the Registrar’s Office, including a court order, marriage certificate, social security card, passport or driver’s license. Upon receipt and verification of this documentation, the Registrar’s Office will change the legal name in the central database and notify other offices. The College will keep an internal record of the former name. To receive an updated Emerson Identification (EID) at no cost, the current EID must be turned in. The ID Office is located on the first floor of Piano Row. The first reprint of an ID Card, requesting a name update, will be free of charge for Students, Faculty and Staff. There will be a $25.00 reprint fee associated with any additional name update requests. For international students, it is important that their “legal name” at Emerson match their current and complete passport name (including all last names). Changes to an Emerson “preferred” name should reflect the proper name that correctly identifies the student. For F-1 international students, the “legal” name in Emerson systems must match their current passport in order to ensure correct reporting by OISA to SEVIS. Emerson OISA will not automatically update an Emerson “preferred” name to the “preferred” name field in SEVIS as this becomes a part of the immigration record.

Application Requirements: Supporting Academic Credentials

First-year applicants must submit a high school transcript and school report, a secondary school counselor evaluation, and a teacher evaluation. Emerson College is test optional. If students choose to submit SAT or ACT scores, they should request that an official score report be sent to Emerson College directly from College Board (SAT) or ACT. Emerson's SAT code is 3367, and its ACT code is 1820. All applicants are asked to submit first marking period grades (first quarter, midterm, first trimester) or midyear (second quarter, first semester, second trimester) grades when they become available. Only students who are sure that Emerson is their first choice and plan to apply as an Early Decision candidate need to complete and submit the Early Decision Agreement. Additional application instructions and requirements are in effect for home-schooled applicants, international applicants, honors program applicants, comedic arts applicants, media production applicants, and performing arts applicants. If applying to a program that requires a creative sample, it can be submitted in the Admission Portal after submitting the Common Application with Emerson Supplement, or Emerson Application, and application fee payment. All application materials may be submitted electronically through Common Application, Slate.org, Parchment and Scoir.

Transfer applicants must submit a high school transcript or GED, a college/university transcript from each college or university attended, and one letter of recommendation. Successful candidates typically have maintained a 3.0 grade point average in previous college coursework. If transcripts are from a college or university outside the United States, they need to be evaluated by World Education Services (WES), Educational Credential Evaluators (ECE), or the Center for Educational Documentation. Emerson requires students to provide an explanation of activities for any gaps in their education. Submitting standardized test scores is optional for transfer students, but students with fewer than 30 completed college credits are encouraged to send their scores if they feel as though it helps their application. International transfer students who have not completed at least three years of consecutive study (at the secondary or post-secondary level) at an institution that uses English as its primary language of instruction are required to take an English proficiency exam. Additional materials may be required for Comedic Arts, Media Production, and Performing Arts applicants. Creative samples can be submitted in the Admission Portal after submitting the Common Application with Emerson Supplement, or Emerson Application, and application fee payment. All application materials may be submitted electronically through Common Application, Slate.org, Parchment and Scoir.

Articulation and Admission Agreements

Emerson has articulation agreements with Miami Dade College (MDC) and Bunker Hill Community College (BHCC), making it possible for MDC and BHCC students to maximize the number of credits that they are able to transfer to Emerson. Emerson College has admission agreements with several area community colleges, including Bristol Community College (BCC), College of the Canyons (CA), Community College of Rhode Island (CCRI), Greenfield Community College (GCC), Holyoke Community College (HCC), Massasoit Community College (MCC), Middlesex Community College of MA (MCC), Mount Wachusett Community College (MWCC), Nashua Community College (NCC), North Shore Community College (NSCC), Raritan Valley Community College (RVCC), and Roxbury Community College (RCC). Applicants who have previously completed an application for transfer admission to Emerson College within the last academic year may submit a reactivation form.
