A Spotlight on Sophomore Year
The Sophomore Summit addresses a critical and often overlooked time in undergraduate life. By focusing on the unique challenges and opportunities of the sophomore year, the program ensures that students maintain connections and continue to develop their academic and career goals. Branden Grimmett, who leads the Pathways Center, emphasizes that the summit helps students make small decisions, reducing the pressure to have all the answers about their future.
The Impact of the Sophomore Summit
The Sophomore Summit has a profound impact on the students who attend, empowering them to make informed decisions about their academic and career paths.
Self-Reflection and Career Path Reevaluation
Reflection activities at the Sophomore Summit encourage students to reevaluate their career paths and identify their values and priorities. Leia Marshall, an Emory College senior, credits the summit with helping her realize what was important to her and leading her to pursue a career in optometry. Similarly, Junior Ciera Butler adapted her academic plans after the retreat, changing her major from political science to history.

Building Connections and Expanding Networks
The Sophomore Summit provides a valuable opportunity for students to connect with peers, faculty, alumni, and staff from across Emory University. These connections can lead to new friendships, mentorship opportunities, and valuable career insights. Marshall, for example, met Gregory Hollinger, associate director of pre-health advising, at the 2023 retreat, which led to her current role as a peer mentor for the Pathways Center’s pre-health advising program.
Reducing Anxiety and Improving Confidence
The Sophomore Summit helps students to reduce anxiety about the future and improve their confidence in their ability to achieve their goals. Ali Hirsch, an Emory College student, found that meeting a wide range of fellow sophomores and hearing from inspiring alumni renewed her sense of belonging at Emory and gave her a new perspective on her career options.
Gaining Essential Insights and Exploring Future Paths
The Sophomore Summit provides students with essential insights about themselves, their interests, and future career paths. It encourages them to explore what they want to do in life and make valuable connections with people who want to see them achieve their goals. Dierkes, an Oxford College sophomore, found that the summit gave him a chance to think about what life would be like after graduation and helped him to identify his next steps.
Uniting Emory's Diverse Communities
The Sophomore Summit unites students from Emory College and Oxford College, fostering a sense of community and collaboration. This is particularly important for sophomores at Oxford College, who will transition to Emory's Atlanta campus as juniors. The summit provides an opportunity for these students to connect with their future classmates and build relationships that will support their transition.
