English-Speaking Union Scholarships: Opportunities for Educational Advancement

The English-Speaking Union (ESU) offers a variety of scholarships aimed at fostering international understanding and educational opportunities for students and teachers alike. These scholarships support study abroad programs, teacher development, and cultural exchange, enriching the lives of recipients and contributing to global dialogue.

Scholarships for Teachers: TLab Program

One of the key initiatives of the ESU is providing scholarships for classroom teachers to participate in the Teachers Learning Abroad (TLab) program. These scholarships are often administered through local ESU branches.

Naples Branch TLab Scholarship

The Naples Branch of the ESU offers TLab scholarships to Language Arts/Drama teachers in Collier and Lee Counties.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Applicants must be Language Arts/Drama teachers in grades 9-12.
  • Applicants must have at least one year of teaching experience in Collier County or Lee County.

Every year, the branches of the English-Speaking Union (ESU) provide nearly 50 scholarships for classroom teachers in their communities. The ESU and its branches offer both full and partial scholarships. If you are not awarded an ESU TLab Scholarship, you may still apply to the UK program of your choice through the ESU, however you will need to seek out alternate funding sources.

Application Requirements:

  1. Program Selection: Applicants must select the TLab program they wish to attend and indicate their top choice, explaining their reasons for selecting that particular program. Go Here for information on the 2024 UK courses and dates as reference.
  2. Personal Statement: A one-page personal statement is required, detailing the applicant's goals in attending a TLab program. The statement should explain what the applicant hopes to gain from the course and how it will affect their teaching. It should also provide evidence of the applicant's qualifications, writing abilities, motivation, and adaptability to new circumstances.
  3. Curriculum Vitae (CV)/Resume: Applicants must submit a current CV or resume outlining their educational and professional experience.
  4. Official Academic Transcripts: Submission of official academic transcripts is mandatory. An additional transcript may be submitted as an optional supplement.
  5. Letters of Recommendation: Two letters of recommendation from a colleague or principal of the applicant's school are required.
  6. Funding Sources: Applicants should indicate what additional sources of funding they will pursue should they receive a partial scholarship.

Refund Policy: Scholars will adhere to the UK program refund and cancellation policies.

Scholarships for Students

The ESU also provides scholarships for students, particularly those attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), to study in the United Kingdom.

Luard Morse Scholarship

The Luard Morse Scholarship provides up to $30,000 towards a semester of study at a British university to deserving students attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Since the inaugural 1969-70 academic year, 90 Luard Scholars have performed with distinction at 18 British universities, including University of Oxford, Cambridge University, University of Edinburgh, and the London School of Economics.

Since 1969, The English-Speaking Union has provided Luard Morse Scholarships to students attending historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) to study in the United Kingdom. These merit awards, which are open to sophomores pursuing a four-year degree, provide up to $25,000 for a semester of study at any university in the United Kingdom. Students in all disciplines are eligible.

The English-Speaking Union of the United States is pleased to announce Mr. Shang Andrews II has been selected as the 2022 Luard Morse Scholarship recipient. Mr. Andrews of Potomac Falls, VA is a student at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University in Greensboro, NC, where he is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering. Under the Luard Morse Scholarship, Mr. Andrews intends to continue his study of Computer Science in the United Kingdom. Given Mr. Andrews’s strong academic and leadership track record, we are confident that Mr.

Kennedy Williams, a sophomore biology major at North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University, represents the highest caliber of student-scholars our nation has to offer. The ESU is honored to support her educational efforts as she broadens her horizons with this study-abroad opportunity to the United Kingdom. Now more than ever, the need for global dialogue and relationships between people is critical to a peaceful future. Kennedy intends to continue her study of Biology in the United Kingdom in pursuit of her long-term career goal of becoming a forensic medical examiner.

Secondary School Exchange (SSE) Scholarship

Secondary School Exchange is one of the ESU’s oldest education programs. During this “extra” year of high school, these young scholars have new academic and social experiences in another country and culture. The ESU SSE Scholarship is open to high school seniors for the year immediately following graduation. Citizens and demonstrate strong scholastic achievement, extra-curricular participation, leadership, and personal character.

The appointment grants Ortiz a full scholarship to spend a year between high school and college at a British boarding school. Next year, he will study at Eastbourne College in East Sussex, England. He has already been accepted to Bowdoin College, a top liberal arts college located in Brunswick, Maine, for the 2019-2020 academic year and plans to study English, philosophy, and politics. Every year, ESU Secondary School Exchange Scholars from the United States studying in the United Kingdom travel from across the UK to gather at the English-Speaking Union in London for a Thanksgiving Celebration at Dartmouth House. The scholars have been in the UK since early September studying at nine schools in England, Scotland, and Wales as a part of the SSE program. Each year the ESU London branch generously hosts a Thanksgiving dinner for the SSE Scholars studying abroad in the UK.

The ESU also provides opportunities for summer study at prestigious institutions like Oxford University.

Summer Study at Oxford University

Immerse yourself in the life of Oxford University through these rigorous, graduate-level courses. In your spare time, explore the historic surroundings of the university and city. Study in small interactive seminar groups, led by specialist Oxford tutors, and conduct research with your own Bodleian Library card. Join fellow scholars for walking tours, after-dinner discussions, and weekend excursions to sites of literary and/or historical interest. You will live as a student of Exeter College, one of Oxford’s oldest colleges, founded in 1314, and become a member of the Oxford summer community.

Program Details:

  • Location: Exeter College, Oxford University.
  • Cost: $6700 (includes tuition, access to libraries and IT facilities, single accommodation in Exeter College with shared bath, and most meals in Exeter College Dining Hall).
  • Structure: Rigorous, graduate-level seminars.
  • Contact Hours: Minimum of 46.5 contact hours (24 hours of seminar meetings and 22.5 hours of lectures).
  • Class Size: No more than 15 students.
  • Certificate: Certificate of completion from the University of Oxford upon submission of course work.
  • Assessment: Contribution to seminar discussions, grades achieved for written work, and the number of private study hours required.

  1. Personal Statement: A one-page personal statement, detailing your academic reasons for wishing to attend the summer school. This should include what you hope to get out of the course, and what you are likely to contribute to the intellectual life of the summer school. This may include details of related courses you have previously taken, or the relevance of the summer school to your present course of study or professional development.
  2. Fees: Fees already paid to the UK institution will be returned according to the institution’s cancellation policy, as specified in their materials.
