Inaugural Recipient: Thinley Choden
The inaugural recipient of this scholarship is Thinley Choden, who joined Lewis & Clark's LLM program in the fall. Ms. Choden plans to use her LLM degree to work on environmental concerns and sustainable development in her home country of Bhutan. She holds a BA LLB (Hons) with first division with distinction from Amity University in India. She began her career as a Court Registrar at the Supreme Court of Bhutan in 2020, after receiving the highest score on the Royal Civil Service Examination (Law) and the Post Graduate Diploma in National Law (PGDNL). In the same year, she was appointed as the Personal Secretary to Her Royal Highness Princess Sonam Dechan Wangchuck, the Honorable President of the Bhutan National Legal Institute (BNLI), JSW School of Law, and the Bar Council of Bhutan. Choden expressed her gratitude to the Karuna Foundation and Lewis & Clark Law School for the generous scholarship and support.
Significance of the Scholarship
This is the first time Lewis & Clark Law School has received funding for a significant scholarship for an Environmental LLM student. Associate Dean Janice Weis notes that this level of support allows the school to attract students from parts of the world that will be deeply affected by environmental issues and climate change. Eligibility Criteria
The scholarship is open to students from countries where the Karuna Foundation has an active grantmaking program and who have been accepted to the LLM in Environmental, Natural Resources & Energy Law at Lewis & Clark Law School. The Karuna Foundation focuses its funding efforts in Bhutan, with the aim of fostering contributions to climate change mitigation and adaptation in the Himalayan region.

Environmental Law Conference at Yosemite® Scholarships
The Environmental Law Section of The California Lawyers Association offers at least 25 tuition scholarships AND five (5) Michael H. Remy Scholarships to students, practitioners, and other environmental professionals to attend the Environmental Law Conference at Yosemite®. This conference is a nationally recognized gathering of leaders in environmental, land use, and natural resources law in California. The Scholarship Committee reviews all applications received by the deadline.

Scholarship Details
Recipients of the award who are California residents receive full resident tuition and fees for three academic years, beginning in fall 2023, provided they remain students in good standing. Recipients who are not California residents receive full non-resident tuition and fees for their first year of law school, and full California resident tuition and fees for their second and third years of law school. Most UCLA Law students are able to qualify for resident tuition status in their second and third years. The UCLA Health Insurance Fee, which can be waived with evidence of similar coverage, is not included and remains the responsibility of the student.
