Ethereum Foundation Internship Program: A Gateway to the Future of Blockchain
The Ethereum Foundation (EF) has officially announced the opening of applications for its 2026 Internship Program. This global initiative invites candidates from around the world to participate in a 12-week paid internship focused on advancing the Ethereum protocol and ecosystem. This program is designed to provide emerging engineers and researchers with practical experience in tackling intricate problems related to Ethereum’s ongoing evolution.
About the Ethereum Foundation
The Ethereum Foundation is a global non-profit organization dedicated to supporting Ethereum and related technologies. Its mission is to foster Ethereum’s long-term success. The EF allocates resources to critical projects, serves as a valued voice within the Ethereum ecosystem, and advocates for Ethereum to the outside world.
Internship Overview
The EF Internship offers a unique opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research that spans computer science, distributed systems, crypto-economics, and mechanism design. Interns will work closely with Ethereum Foundation researchers, their collaborators, and other contributors across the ecosystem, tackling both foundational and applied research challenges. Furthermore, interns will have opportunities to share their findings through platforms like ethresear.ch, academic publications, or conference submissions, helping shape the future of Ethereum.
Program Structure and Objectives
The internship is structured to provide emerging engineers and researchers with practical experience in tackling complex problems related to Ethereum’s ongoing evolution. Interns will work under the guidance of experienced mentors, gaining insights into real-world applications of their work within Ethereum’s open and collaborative environment.
Target Candidates
The internship targets university students and recent graduates who demonstrate a passion for Ethereum, open-source contributions, and decentralized technologies. Ideal candidates will have a foundational understanding of Ethereum and be eager to expand their knowledge through practical work. Selected interns will be assigned a short-term project and a mentor and should expect to work somewhat autonomously.

Internship Duration and Location
The duration of the internship is 12 weeks during the summer of 2026. Interns can choose to work remotely or in one of the EF offices, in Boulder (USA) or Berlin (Germany). In addition, interns will be invited for an in-person cohort meetup in the summer.
Internship Roles and Teams
Interns will be placed in various teams within the EF, each focusing on different facets of Ethereum’s development. Roles include cryptography research, DevOps, funding coordination, and protocol consensus, among others. Each position is linked to active projects, allowing interns to contribute directly to Ethereum’s advancement.
Here are some of the teams and areas where interns can contribute:
Protocol Security
The Protocol Security Research team safeguards Ethereum’s integrity. Through coordination, meticulous code reviews, research, developing advanced tooling, and real-world simulations, they focus on securing the network and its critical components. Their hands-on approach includes managing the bug bounty program, continuously monitoring the network, and collaborating with client teams. They are committed to identifying and mitigating risks to Ethereum mainnet.
Robust Incentives Group
The Robust Incentives Group is a research team dedicated to the study of mechanism design and cryptoeconomics for Ethereum. Their work maps all the ways that incentives directly or indirectly affect users and protocol stakeholders of Ethereum. Where possible, they propose mechanisms to recover incentive compatibility and system optimality. Their methods are varied, from formal analysis to data science and simulations, and they engage academic and general audiences with diverse formats of grants, publications, and talks.

Portal Network
The Portal Network is a new networking design for Ethereum that aims to solve the data availability problem for "light" nodes without having to trust or put extra strain on full nodes, by sharing the necessary data in small chunks across the network.
Geth
Geth (go-ethereum) is a Go implementation of Ethereum - a gateway into the decentralized web. Geth has been a core part of Ethereum since the very beginning. Geth is an Ethereum execution client meaning it handles transactions, deployment and execution of smart contracts and contains an embedded computer known as the Ethereum Virtual Machine. The team is responsible for research and development of various components and standards of account abstraction, chain abstraction and cross-L2 communication. The go-ethereum team builds Geth, an Ethereum execution-layer client written in Go. Within the EF, they do research and development of the Ethereum protocol. As core developers, they shape the protocol and judge external contributions.
zkEVM Team
Bringing zkEVMs to L1 is a multi-faceted effort. Their work is organized into three core workstreams, with parallel progress on client implementations.
- Real-Time Proving: The core challenge is generating a proof for a full Ethereum block within the 12-second slot time. Their work focuses on prover performance, parallelization, and hardware acceleration to meet this latency target.
- Client & Protocol Integration: They are designing how zkEVMs will integrate into Ethereum's execution and consensus layers. This involves standardizing interfaces and defining the protocol changes for clients to request and verify proofs.
- Economic Incentives & Security: A robust protocol requires sound incentives. They are researching models for prover markets, censorship resistance, and aligning builder and prover incentives to ensure network liveness and security.
Application Process and Important Dates
The application window remains open until December 1, 2025, with shortlisted applicants invited for interviews in the following months. Applicants will receive decisions by January 30th, 2026. Applicants should be familiar with the Ethereum protocol and available for full-time work. If currently in university, they should be advanced in their studies. The internship is geared toward those available for a defined 'summer time' commitment with a general skillset and a desire to learn how to apply that skillset to the Ethereum domain.
AI-Assisted Review
The hiring team will use an AI-assisted tool to help them review resumes for this role. Here’s what that means:

- Your resume is anonymized before the AI review.
- We have been assured that your information will not be used to train AI models.
- Human reviewers make all final decisions. The AI tool does not reject or advance candidates automatically.
- The tool simply helps the hiring team manage a large volume of applications by highlighting potential fits.
The Ethereum Foundation may use artificial intelligence (AI) tools to support parts of the hiring process, such as reviewing applications, analyzing resumes, or assessing responses. These tools assist the recruitment team but do not replace human judgment. Final hiring decisions are ultimately made by humans.
The Broader Context: Ethereum and the Next Billion Users
In Internet lore, 'the next billion' is often told as a grand narrative about shifting perspectives and challenged assumptions. As a meme, it lets us question the form and function of technologies that reach the scale of “world-wide” use. Web3 does not yet have a first billion users, but shifting perspectives and challenging assumptions is an evergreen endeavor. There are about eight billion human people at the moment, and Ethereum is supposed to treat every-one fairly, to the extent that it’s possible to treat people fairly when capabilities and needs are so different in this world. Someone of 'the next billion' lives in a world filled with games, too often played for life-and-death outcomes. It's a messy, complicated place some think might need saving. But within any world, with the right tools at hand, people will solve their own problems; they will create their own opportunities; they will imagine their own future. The future is a frontier.
