The Evans Scholar Program is a charitable trust that provides undergraduate scholarships for deserving caddies, a concept originated by Charles "Chick" Evans Jr.
The Origins of a Vision
The story of the Evans Scholars Foundation is deeply rooted in the life and values of Charles "Chick" Evans Jr. A successful golfer, Evans found himself in a unique position after several victories earned him royalties from golf instruction recordings and a book he authored in 1921. To maintain his amateur status, Evans couldn't accept this money personally. Inspired by his mother, he decided to use the funds to create a scholarship for caddies. Evans' mother "wouldn't think of accepting my money unless we could arrange it to be trusted to furnish educations for deserving, qualified caddies." He also said his mother "pointed out that the money came from golf and thus should go back into golf.
Evans approached the Western Golf Association (WGA) for support, but they initially declined, focusing solely on golf championships like the Western Open. However, Evans persevered, and in 1930, his and his mother's vision materialized when Harold Fink and Jim McGinnis became the first Evans Scholars.
Growth and Expansion
After Evans' initial investment was depleted, avid golfer and philanthropist Blunt stepped in to raise funds and sustain the program. The Western Golf Association hired Roland F. to help grow the program as Blunt raised additional funds for scholarship. Following World War II, the program grew dramatically. In 1950, the Foundation sent just 84 caddies to college. As the number of scholarships grew so did the organization's presence on a number of college campus, mainly those in the Midwest. As the program expanded, so did its reach and impact. In 2013, The Evans Scholars Foundation sent Scholars to the University of Notre Dame. Today, the Foundation boasts a significant presence on numerous college campuses, primarily in the Midwest, with 17 Scholarship Houses providing a supportive community for its scholars. Now, 840 Evans Scholars are enrolled at over 19 universities, and 14 universities have Evans Scholarship Houses.
Key Requirements for the Evans Scholarship
Aspiring Evans Scholars must meet specific criteria to be considered for this prestigious scholarship. To qualify for an Evans Scholarship, a caddie must meet four key requirements. Caddying Experience
Candidates must have at least two years of outstanding caddying service. This requirement highlights the importance of dedication and commitment to the caddying profession. Applicants must have caddied for a minimum of two years and 50 loops.

Candidates must have an excellent high school academic record, including high standardized test scores. The Foundation seeks students who have excelled academically and demonstrated a commitment to their education. Applicants also must have a 3.0 or higher GPA and have taken the ACT.

Several Evans Scholars Alumni have gone on to excel in the business world and other fields.
