The Evolution of the Fairfield University Stags Logo: A Visual History
Fairfield University, a private Jesuit institution in Fairfield, Connecticut, has a rich history dating back to its founding in 1942. An important aspect of the university's identity is its athletics program, the Fairfield Stags. The Stags have a long and storied tradition. The Fairfield Stags' visual identity, particularly its logo, has evolved over the years, reflecting the university's growth and the athletic program's increasing prominence.
The Origins of the Stags
The Fairfield University sports program emerged in the 1940s. In the fall of 1947, the university began sponsoring a cross-country running team and chose the nickname "Men In Red" for it. The following year, men's basketball was introduced as its next team and its first varsity sport. With the start of varsity sports, the school put it to the students for input in naming of a school mascot. Two recommendations were made to the board of trustees for an official decision and vote. As the late Fr. Charles F. Duffy S.J. recounted: "As a member of the Board of Trustees, I remember voting at a board meeting late in 1948 on the naming for our athletic teams. What made the decision for the Board a bit easier and logical was that the school was part of the Diocese of Hartford and the word Hartford means stags (hart) and stream (ford). The modern logo of the Fairfield Stags sports program at Fairfield University, which appeared in the 1940s, depicts a red stag. This is a tribute to the history of joining the Hartford Diocese. The symbol represents speed, nobility, and strength.
1991-2001: The First Modern Logo
In advance of the 1991 season, the university introduced its first modern logo. It included a large letter "U" in red with a stag's head on the forefront. The word "Fairfield," also in red, could be seen above, while the word "Stags" in a creative typeface was placed below the emblem. The second word looked more prominent due to the choice of font and size.
2002-Present: A Dynamic Stag Emerges
In 2002, a different logo appeared. While it also sported a stag's head, it was now facing to the right. Horizontal strokes helped to create a dynamic style. The lettering was different, too. Later, the university slightly altered the shade of red making it somewhat brighter. In spite of this update, the overall style of the emblem, as well as the typeface, remained the same.
Brand Guidelines: Colors and Visual Identity
The Visual Identity Guide published in the summer of 2017 mentions two official colors: red (Pantone 186, RGB: 224; 58; 62) and black (Pantone Black, RGB: 35, 31, 32). Both of the colors are featured on the primary Fairfield Stags logo, where they are paired with white (for the background). The "F" emblem (secondary logo) also uses grey (for the shade). Fairfield University’s ability to carry out its mission can be helped or hindered by the perceptions of the people it seeks to serve. Its visual image - the appearance of the University’s brochures, advertisements, and other materials - says something about its values, purpose, and services. A cohesive graphic style conveys a sense of identity and personality, which helps to create greater recognition and understanding. Fairfield University’s Design & Print Services (D&P) in the Division of Marketing and Communications has been charged with monitoring and maintaining Fairfield’s brand identity. All materials bearing the University Seal and/or the University’s logo, including publications, postcards, advertisements, and products (pens, banners, notebooks, apparel, signage, etc.) must be reviewed by Design & Digital Print Services.
