Scholarships for Students Affected by Cancer

Many scholarships cater specifically to students who have battled cancer or have been impacted by a loved one's diagnosis. These scholarships recognize the hardships these students and their families face and aim to provide financial support for their educational pursuits.

Eligibility and Requirements

Scholarship eligibility varies, but common criteria include:

Diagnosis: Open to students who have been diagnosed with cancer themselves, as well as those who have stood by a loved one. Open to blood cancer patients or survivors diagnosed at age 25 or younger.
Educational Level: High school seniors or current college students are eligible for these scholarships. Open to graduating seniors from a public or private high school planning to attend a post-high school institution (two or four-year college, vocational or technical school) within the United States in the fall after graduation.
Academic Standing: Students must have at least a GPA of 3.0/4.0 or a 4.0/5.0. and rank in the top half of their class and have at least an SAT score of 1000 or an ACT of 21.
Essay/Personal Statement: These questions must also be answered, “How has receiving a cancer diagnosis for you or your loved one impacted your life? How did it impact you while your loved one was fighting their illness? What hardships did you or your family experience?
Specific Ties: These scholarships will be granted to students who have a tie to the state of Arizona. All applicants must reside in Arizona or have received cancer treatment in Arizona.

Examples of Cancer-Related Scholarships

Michael A. Hunter Memorial Scholarship: Available to provide financial assistance to college students in their pursuit of a higher education who have previously or are currently diagnosed with cancer.
Scholarships for Survivors and Siblings: For the Survivor Scholarship, survivors of a form of pediatric cancer aged 16-26 with a home address in Iowa are eligible to apply. For the Sibling Scholarship, siblings of patients who have been diagnosed with a form of pediatric cancer aged 16-26 with a home address in Iowa are eligible to apply.
The Stephen T. Marchello Scholarship Foundation: Eligibility includes survivors of childhood cancer, their parents and siblings, as well as immediate family members of those who did not survive their cancer.
NCCF Survivor Scholarship Program: Administered by the National Collegiate Cancer Foundation (NCCF), this award assists cancer survivors or current cancer patients aged 18-35. Each applicant must enroll in an undergraduate, master’s, or doctoral program at an accredited college or university.
NCCS Beyond the Cure Ambassador Scholarship: The National Children’s Cancer Society (NCCS) offers scholarships for graduate or undergraduate students who are under the age of 25 and were diagnosed with cancer before their 18th birthday.

GRCF ATHENA Eileen DeVries Scholarship: The Grand Rapids Community Foundation's ATHENA Eileen DeVries Scholarship is awarded to a student that identifies as female and will be over the age of 29 at the start of academic year for which the funds are awarded. The recipient must be attending an undergraduate program at a specified college or university in Michigan. Applicants must have a 2.5 minimum cumulative GPA.
GRCF Hackett Family Scholarship: The Grand Rapids Community Foundation's Hackett Family Scholarship is offered to students of color who identify as female, are graduates of any Grand Rapids Public Schools, Grandville, Godfrey Lee, Godwin, Kelloggsville, East Kentwood, or Wyoming high schools, with a minimum 2.0 GPA and who will enroll full time.
GRCF Lavina Laible Scholarship: The Grand Rapids Community Foundation's Lavina Laible Scholarship is offered to a female-identifying student studying at the University of Michigan. Applicants must be a resident of Kent County.
Joyce Ivy Summer Scholars Scholarship: Welcome to the Joyce Ivy Summer Scholars Scholarship application process! If you're a high-achieving, female-identifying high school student residing in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Nebraska, Missouri, Minnesota, North Dakota, or South Dakota, and attending high school in one of these states, you're in the right place. This scholarship opportunity is tailored for students entering 11th or 12th grade in the upcoming fall.
AWS Barbara and Richard Couch Hypertherm Scholarship: The The Barbara and Richard Couch Hypertherm Scholarship will be awarded to a student pursuing a two or four-year degree in an engineering or technical major in the welding or cutting fields (i.e., applicable areas of mechanical, software, process, electrical engineering). To be eligible, applicants must: either be currently enrolled in their final year of high school or equivalent program or must have a minimum high school diploma or equivalent; and have a 2.8 GPA.
GRCF Harry J. Morris, Jr. Emergency Services Scholarship: The Grand Rapids Community Foundation's Harry J. Morris, Jr. Emergency Services Scholarship is offered to a resident of Kent, Allegan, Barry, Ionia, Ottawa, Montcalm, Muskegon, or Newaygo County pursuing an undergraduate certificate or degree at an accredited education program in Michigan in the field of emergency medical technician, paramedic or firefighter training. Applicants must have a 2.5 cumulative grade point average.
Geiger Scholarship: The Geiger Scholarship offers financial support for students interested in expanding their educational horizons through off-island enrichment and travel experiences, including summer camp, semester study abroad, and gap year programs. Students are eligible for up to 4 Geiger Scholarships: once in grades 6-8, once in grades 9-12, once in college and once for a gap year. Must meet one or more of the following requirements: - Middle school through college students living on one of Maine’s year-round, unbridged islands - Currently enrolled in or graduated from the highest grade level available at your island school - Magnet student with a demonstrated commitment to their island school and enrolled in at least their second year or have plans to return for a second year.

Nursing Scholarships for Students with Disabilities

Undergraduate Nursing ScholarshipsStudents living with disabilities might not realize the range of scholarships available for nursing school. A great starting point for financial aid opportunities - including graduate school - is completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) application. While the following list of scholarships is not exhaustive, it covers several different funding opportunities for high school and undergraduate students living with disabilities.

AbbVie Cystic Fibrosis Scholarship: This scholarship assists 40 exceptional students with cystic fibrosis.
Christopher Mark Pitkin Memorial Scholarship: This scholarship supports individuals living with a bleeding disorder or an immediate family member who has one. Applicants must reside in Southern California counties, including Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Luis Obispo, Ventura, Kern, Inyo and Santa Barbara.
Cochlear Americas Academic Scholarship: Students who have received Cochlear Nuclear Implants are eligible for this award.
College Scholarship: This organization awards an annual undergraduate scholarship to two students who provide documentation of blood disorders or cancer diagnoses. Each candidate must provide a copy of their college acceptance letter or transcript and submit an essay on any topic of their choice.
Flora Marie Jenkins Memorial Disability Scholarship: Students with documented disabilities who are pursuing a college degree are eligible for this scholarship.
GLHF Education Scholarship: Great Lakes Hemophilia Foundation provides tuition assistance to students living with bleeding disorders, or their family members. Applicants must reside in Wisconsin or receive care at the Wisconsin Hemophilia Treatment Centers.Amount: up to $500 per class
International Essential Tremor Foundation: Individuals with an essential tremor and hold at least a 3.0 GPA and attend accredited institutions may apply. Applicants must have a record of community service and leadership skills.
JCS Community Services Scholarship: The Jewish Federation of Baltimore offers this Jewish Community Services Scholarship to Jewish high school seniors living with learning disabilities.
Jennifer Leigh Soper Cystic Fibrosis Scholarship: Sponsored by the Blue Grass Community Foundation, this award supports graduating high school students living with cystic fibrosis who plan to attend college. Past recipients may reapply annually.
Kevin Child Scholarship: This scholarship assists students with hemophilia A or B who are attending college or vocational school. Applicants must submit a personal essay, official transcripts, and a letter of recommendation.
Mays Mission Scholarship: Students with a physical or mental disability and a score of at least 20 on the ACT or 970 on the SAT may apply. Applicants must be enrolled in a four-year undergraduate program, maintain a 3.0 GPA, and agree to provide proof of enrollment each semester.
Michael A. Hunter Memorial Scholarship: This scholarship is for students with leukemia or lymphoma, or students who lost a parent to leukemia or lymphoma. Recipients must be full-time students, have financial need, and have at least a 3.0 GPA.
Sertoma Scholarship: This scholarship assists students who are deaf or hard of hearing, with a minimum of 40dB bilateral hearing loss.

Graduate Nursing Scholarships

Baer Reintegration Scholarship: Students who are diagnosed with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or schizoaffective disorder may apply for this scholarship.
Frederick J. Krause Scholarship: The American Association on Health and Disability awards this scholarship to students with a disability who are pursuing graduate degrees.
INCIGHT Scholarship: Current residents of Washington, Oregon, or California with any type of documented disability may apply for this award. Each recipient must attend higher education, including graduate school, and provide enrollment verification to INCIGHT.Amount: Varies, starts at $500
LD Resources Assistive Technology Award: Students in graduate or undergraduate programs who have a learning disability and recent documentation can apply for a laptop or tablet to support assistive technology.
