Fall Internships: A Guide to Launching Your Tech Career

For upperclassmen and recent graduates looking to gain real-world experience, fall internships and early career programs offer invaluable opportunities to launch a tech career. GitHub, along with numerous other companies, provides avenues for students and graduates to learn, expand their skills, and explore potential career paths. This article explores the landscape of fall internships, fellowships, and early career opportunities, with a focus on programs relevant to those interested in software engineering, hardware, AI, graphics, and related fields.

The Value of Internships and Fellowships

Internships and fellowships serve as a bridge between academic learning and professional practice. They provide a mutually beneficial collaboration where interns can contribute to real projects, gain hands-on experience, and learn from experienced professionals. For companies like GitHub, hosting interns brings fresh perspectives and allows them to identify and nurture future talent. Having a summer intern join our team was an amazing opportunity for her and for us!

Fellowships can take many forms, including traditional internships, mentorship programs, training initiatives, and opportunities to contribute to open-source projects. They are available throughout the year - Spring, Summer, and Fall - and may include a stipend. A type of fellowship hosted by NPOs/VCs for matching students to internships. Match to fall/summer/spring internships.

GitHub's Early in Profession Programs

GitHub actively seeks ambitious and inquisitive interns every summer, providing them with a platform to learn, expand their skills, and experience the work environment of a "Hubber." GitHub is constantly updating and expanding our Early in Profession programs. These programs represent a commitment to fostering the next generation of technology professionals.

Interns at GitHub are given the opportunity to work on projects that have a real impact. For example, one intern at GitHub jumped into learning GitHub Actions and created some truly awesome automations for document age detection and labeling (among other things), greatly helping us in our never ending endeavor to make things easier, better and faster. Another intern delivered ChatOps that represents a significant quality-of-life improvement for our team and adjacent teams long after the internship ended. Our intern left with a better understanding of what Solutions Engineering looks like as a career path and what sorts of tools and processes we need to do our jobs effectively; she gained hands-on experience writing code that became part of the GitHub code base, and got first-hand experience testing and deploying code at GitHub. Our intern was guided by a mentor and learned from designers and engineers across GitHub.
