Farber Educational Campus: A New Chapter in Fresno's Alternative Education

In the Fresno Unified School District, a significant project is underway: the creation of the Farber Educational Campus in Southeast Fresno. With the campus set to open its doors in August 2024, anticipation is building among school administrators and the community. This $65 million campus, dedicated to alternative education, represents a substantial investment in students who may have been overlooked in the past.

A Transformative Location

The Farber Educational Campus is located at Ventura and 10th Street in Southeast Fresno, on the site of the former juvenile hall, which was torn down in 2019. Pete Pulos, the principal of Cambridge High School, sees the transformation of this location as a powerful symbol. "Tearing down the 'Hall of Shame' where dreams went to die, we're going to build dreams here," Pulos said.

A Hub for Alternative Education

The campus will house Cambridge High School, J.E. Young Academic Center (the independent study program), and eLearn Center (the online learning course). Michael Niehoff, Executive Director of Alternative Education, emphasizes that bringing these three schools together is intended to encourage collaboration and create a more enriching environment for students. "The hope is the more people coming from different programs and sharing different ideas and perspectives, overall, we get a better experience for our students," Niehoff said.

State-of-the-Art Facilities

The Farber Educational Campus boasts state-of-the-art facilities designed to provide students with a comprehensive and engaging learning experience. These include modern classrooms, a student union, and a 10,000-square-foot logistics lab.

Logistics and Warehouse Management Program

The logistics lab will support the Logistics and Warehouse Management program, offering students hands-on experience with logistics and supply chain management. This program provides a practical management perspective of key areas such as:

Multimedia and Video Production Program

The campus also offers a Multimedia and Video Production program, where students will learn to write public service announcements and television commercial scripts. They will gain experience in filming, editing, and producing videos using professional equipment and software.

Public Services Program

For students interested in public service, the campus features a program focusing on Emergency Medical Services.

Opportunities for Growth

The Farber Educational Campus aims to provide students with opportunities to transform their lives and change their trajectories. Niehoff says the campus is really trying to give them something that really - I say - transform their lives, give them an experience that's really going to change their trajectory. In addition to career-focused programs, students will have the option of dual enrollment, allowing them to take college-level courses while still in high school.

A Model for the Future

Principal Pulos envisions the Farber Educational Campus as a model for other alternative education schools across the country. "I hope this sets the stage for other schools across the country," Pulos said. The focus on collaboration, state-of-the-art facilities, and career-focused programs make this campus a promising example of how to invest in and support students who may benefit from alternative educational pathways.

A Significant Investment

The 12.8-acre Farber Campus represents a significant investment in the future of Fresno's students. The campus is named after Francine and Murray Farber. The $65 million project demonstrates the district's commitment to providing diverse educational opportunities and preparing students for success in college and careers.

A History of Fresno Schools

"A History of Fresno Schools" was originally written by Dr. Addicott in 1980. To maintain the spirit and style of Dr. Addicott's work, the history of the names of the new schools opened since 1980 has been added. Also added is a section for schools no longer in operation, and information on schools that have been significantly changed. Potential significant changes may include sites that have changed grade bands (i.e. Sequoia Freshman High School is now Sequoia Middle School, so it is located in the middle school listings rather than the high school listings,) or that have changed their intended use.

A Contentious History

Davis Moreno’s history with the district has been contentious. The contract will be the district’s second project labor agreement in which the contractor agrees to use union workers in exchange for guarantees of no work stoppages.
