Through various initiatives, including robust internship programs, Fast Retailing invests in the growth and success of young people, offering them invaluable experiences and skills to shape their future careers.
A Stepping Stone: The UNIQLO Store Management Internship
The UNIQLO Store Management Internship provides students with a hands-on introduction to the world of retail, leadership, and impactful contributions within a dynamic environment. This internship is designed as a stepping stone toward a fulfilling long-term career with UNIQLO. Top-performing interns have the opportunity to join the UNIQLO Manager Candidate (UMC) Program, a comprehensive full-time leadership development track that accelerates careers in store management.
What Interns Do
Interns actively participate in various aspects of store operations, gaining practical experience and developing essential leadership skills. Key responsibilities include:
- Collaborative Project: Interns collaborate on a project focused on improving store operations or enhancing customer experience. This project involves gathering insights from hands-on exposure to store management and Gemba learning, culminating in a presentation to company leaders with practical and impactful recommendations.
- Manager on Duty: During selected shifts, interns serve as Manager on Duty, gaining hands-on leadership experience by overseeing store operations, guiding the team, and understanding how KPIs are achieved in real time. This provides a valuable opportunity to learn the intricacies of leading and managing a UNIQLO store.
- Gemba Engagement: Interns engage with Gemba (the sales floor) to observe customer interactions and operational workflows. This direct interaction provides valuable insights into customer preferences and the practical aspects of store operations.

Developing Solutions
Internship programs challenge students to develop innovative solutions to real-world business challenges. For instance, Binghamton University School of Management students tackled the challenge of marketing a blazer on an international scale. The internship program spans six weeks with eight days of in-person experiences and launched in 2019 as an opportunity to bring business students nationwide together with the company’s top leaders. “Seeing the leadership on that global level was fascinating. They would talk about the way they shaped philosophy in other countries while remaining true to their own company values and being able to manage marketing pushes when the cultures are different,” said Petz, an accounting major with a concentration in management information systems. Ng, a business administration major whose interests include data analytics and possibly pursuing a career in the fashion or retail industry, was gripped most by the feedback judges from within the company offered after student presentations.
