Finger Lakes Community College: An Overview

Finger Lakes Community College (FLCC) is a public community college located in Canandaigua, New York. FLCC is affiliated with the State University of New York (SUNY) and sponsored by Ontario County. It holds accreditation from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.

History and Location

Established in 1965, Finger Lakes Community College initially opened its doors in 1967 as the Community College of the Finger Lakes (CCFL). The original "campus" was located in a storefront in Canandaigua, NY. Today, the college is situated on a 250-acre park-like campus just outside of Canandaigua. FLCC also operates campus centers in Geneva, Newark, and Victor, a Viticulture and Wine Center in Geneva, and two environmental conservation field stations.

The main road leading to the campus was renamed Marvin Sands Drive in honor of Marvin Sands.

Campus Features and Facilities

FLCC's main campus boasts the Constellation Brands - Marvin Sands Performing Arts Center (CMAC). Adjacent to the campus is affiliated housing at the 356-bed Suites at Laker Landing. In spring 2012, the college opened a 78,000 square foot Student Life Center. This LEED-certified green building houses a 400-seat cafeteria, a One-Stop enrollment services center, a bookstore, and a 410-seat auditorium.

A wireless computer network is available throughout the campus. The number of computers available are 425. At least one staffed computer lab is available to students.

Academics and Programs

Finger Lakes Community College offers more than 60 degree and certificate programs. The highest degree offered at Finger Lakes Community College is an associate degree. Students can earn degrees and certificates in 68 different fields. Popular programs include: Liberal Arts and Sciences, General Studies and Humanities, Other, Business Administration and Management, General, and Registered Nursing/Registered Nurse. FLCC offers programs that are entirely online, and at least 50 percent online, providing flexibility to student course schedules.

The college has joint admissions and transfer agreements with several four-year, public and private institutions. FLCC also offers short-term training in health care and advanced manufacturing. The school utilizes a semester-based academic year.

FLCC has a robust concurrent enrollment program that enables high school students in its service area to earn college credits.

The college is also home of the Community College Undergraduate Research Initiative (CCURI), which promotes the teaching of science through research nationwide.

Admissions and Enrollment

Finger Lakes Community College has an open admissions policy and an acceptance rate of 83%. It offers credit for life experiences.

In Fall 2023, the total number of entering students was 1,437. The total student enrollment is 5,640. The student-faculty ratio is 23-to-1.

Tuition and Financial Aid

The in-state tuition and fees for 2020-2021 were $5,722, and out-of-state tuition and fees were $6,710. There is no application fee. At Finger Lakes Community College, 37 percent of undergraduates receive grant or scholarship aid and the average scholarship or grant award is $5,015. The average per year after aid is $13K.

Books and supplies cost approximately $1,000.
