The Selection Process

Before XXL's staff selects the class members, they hold daily meetings with nearly 100 of rap's newest stars starting in January before wrapping in April with the final 12 artists chosen. Over the next month, XXL will be releasing freestyles, cyphers, interviews, and more content with each member of the Freshman class.

Declining the Invitation

Interestingly, not every artist offered a spot on the XXL Freshman list accepts it. Several artists have declined the invitation over the years for various reasons. Nicki Minaj and Drake declined the cover, feeling that they had "graduated from the Freshman Class" and that XXL missed the mark by not including them earlier in their careers. Cam'ron wanted Vado to be the center focus of the cover and not share it with other artists. YFN Lucci initially refused to play music for XXL without a guaranteed spot and later declined due to the voting process. Other artists who have declined a spot on the XXL Freshman list include Tory Lanez, Juice Wrld, Benny The Butcher, and Don Toliver. Lil Skies and Rich The Kid have also stated that they declined the list.

XXL: More Than Just Freshman Lists

XXL Magazine has a rich history in hip-hop journalism. In August 1997, Harris Publications released the first issue of XXL, featuring rappers Jay-Z and Master P on a double cover. Over the years, XXL has expanded its brand to include various special projects, such as tour programs, mixtapes, and exclusive DVDs. In December 2006, XXL took over the struggling hip-hop producer and DJ magazine Scratch, rebranding it as XXL Presents Scratch Magazine. The magazine's past editors include Reginald C. Dennis and Elliott Wilson.
