Florida International University: A Comprehensive Guide to Application Requirements
Florida International University (FIU), Miami's only public research university, offers a wide array of opportunities for prospective students. With over 190 degree programs and a commitment to high-quality, accessible education, FIU attracts students from around the globe. This article provides a detailed overview of the application requirements for various programs at FIU, including undergraduate, transfer, and graduate admissions.
Undergraduate Admission
Application Process
The first step towards becoming a Panther is to choose the application that best fits your academic background. FIU offers several application options:
- Transfer Application: For students who have already earned college credits elsewhere and wish to transfer them to FIU.
- Connect4Success Application: Designed for students planning to earn an associate’s degree and then transfer to FIU.
- Medical School Application: For those aspiring to a career in medicine.
- Law School Application: For individuals ready to pursue a legal education.
After submitting your application, you will receive a MyFIU account and Panther ID, which allows you to track your application status, pay tuition, and register for classes. It typically takes two to three business days to view your application status.
Admission Requirements for First-Year Students
FIU's admission process is selective, with an acceptance rate of 54.7%. The admissions committee seeks applicants who demonstrate academic preparedness, a challenging course load, community involvement, and a clear sense of purpose.
Academic Requirements
- High School GPA: While the average GPA of admitted students is around 4.1, FIU recalculates GPA based on courses taken, with consideration given to Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), Dual Enrollment, AICE, and Honors courses. This weighted GPA is also used for scholarship eligibility. The GPA ranges for admitted students are as follows:
- 3.75+: 84%
- 3.50-3.74: 12%
- 3.25-3.49: 3%
- 3.00-3.24: 1%
- 2.50-2.99: 0%
- 2.00-2.49: 0%
- Below 2.00: 0%
- High School Coursework: Applicants must complete the following high school courses:
- 4 credits of English
- 4 credits of mathematics (at or above algebra I or higher)
- 3 credits of natural science (two must have included substantial lab requirements)
- 3 credits of social science (includes anthropology, history, civics, political science, economics, sociology, psychology, and/or geography)
- 2 credits second language
- 2 credits in additional academic electives
- Standardized Test Scores: FIU requires either SAT, ACT, and/or CLT scores for first-time-in-college applicants.
- SAT: The 25th percentile SAT score is 1070, and the 75th percentile is 1250. FIU utilizes superscoring, combining the highest section scores from multiple test dates.
- ACT: The average ACT score is 24, with the 25th percentile at 21 and the 75th percentile at 27. FIU does not superscore the ACT.
- CLT: FIU also accepts the Classic Learning Test (CLT).
- SAT/ACT Essay: FIU considers the SAT Essay/ACT Writing section optional and may not include it as part of their admissions consideration.
Additional Considerations
Strong academic performance, particularly scoring a 1250 SAT or a 27 ACT or above, significantly increases the chances of admission. While extracurricular activities and letters of recommendation are considered, a high SAT/ACT score can compensate for deficiencies in these areas.

Deadlines
To be considered for merit scholarships, applicants must be admitted to FIU by November 1 for those attending Florida high schools and December 17 for those who attend out-of-state or overseas high schools.
Transfer Admission
Transfer students are those who have earned college credits at other institutions and wish to continue their education at FIU.
Requirements
- Credit Requirements:
- Students transferring without an associate's degree or with fewer than 60 credits must submit their SAT or ACT scores and transcripts from all previously attended schools (both high school and college).
- Students with 30-59 credits do not need to submit a high school transcript or test scores if they have:
- Completed ENC 1101 or the equivalent with a ‘C’ or better
- Completed college-level math with a ‘C’ or better
- Maintained at least a 2.0 transfer GPA
- Are in good academic standing at their last institution
- Associate's Degree: Transfers who are starting their third year of college (or are near earning 60 credits) should have a chosen degree. If you are entering FIU with your associate's degree, you must apply to the college or program of your choice in addition to university application.
- GPA: A minimum transfer GPA of 2.0 is required.
- Transcripts: Official transcripts from all schools attended are required.
Additional Information for Both First-Year and Transfer Applicants
- Application Fee: A $30 USD application fee is required, though SAT/ACT fee waivers are accepted.
- Transcript Submission: FIU requires all incoming students, whether first-year or transfer students, to submit all official academic transcripts from every high school or college/university attended prior to submitting their application. Applications will not be reviewed until they are complete. Your transcript(s) should be sent directly from all secondary schools, colleges, and universities you have attended.
- AP, CLEP, IB, and Other Exam Scores: Submit scores separately from the testing agency. AP scores must be a 3 or higher. Scores submitted after the application deadline will not be considered on your application.
- Residency Documentation: All applicants, whether U.S. resident, or international student, are required to submit proof of residency. Failing to provide residency documentation will delay your enrollment.
- Home Education Students: Students completing a home education program according to section 1002.41, Florida Statutes, meet this minimum admission requirement; however, FIU may request additional documentation to demonstrate college readiness.
- GED Students: Applicants presenting a GED must present official GED results and official transcripts or any partial high school completion. Applicants with a GED from any state must achieve a total battery score of 600, with no sub score lower than 150 and a minimum test score of 1090 SAT or a minimum composite score of 21 on the ACT.
Graduate Admission
FIU admits over 6,000 graduate students annually, with admissions requirements varying by program.
General Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree: Hold a bachelor's degree (or equivalent) from an accredited college or university.
- GPA: Have a GPA of 3.0 (on a 4-point scale) established through the overall undergraduate degree GPA or the last 60 credits of the degree GPA; or have earned a graduate degree with a minimum 3.0 GPA.

- Transcripts: Official transcript of each previously attended university (undergraduate and graduate) in an envelope sealed by the degree-granting institution. If an official transcript is not in English, the applicant must obtain two sets of transcripts: one to be submitted to FIU in the original language and the other to be translated by an official translation agency (or certified translator).
- Proof of Degree: Official proof of degree: a notarized copy of the original diploma is required if the degree is granted from a foreign institution not posted on the official transcripts.
