Lawsuits Arise Following Injuries on Harry Potter Ride at Universal's Epic Universe
The unveiling of Universal Orlando Resort's Epic Universe generated considerable excitement, particularly for its Wizarding World of Harry Potter expansion. The park aimed to immerse fans in beloved worlds, offering thrilling and safe experiences. However, recent lawsuits have cast a shadow over the park's newest attraction, "Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry," raising questions about ride safety and reliability.
Ride Malfunctions and Injuries
Twin brothers, Derrick and Erick Burrough, have filed separate lawsuits against Universal Studios, alleging injuries sustained on Christmas Day while riding "Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry" at Epic Universe. Represented by Morgan & Morgan, the brothers seek damages exceeding $50,000 each.
According to the lawsuits, the incident occurred on December 25, when the brothers were visiting Epic Universe with family members. While seated on the ride, a malfunction allegedly caused the ride vehicle to come to an abrupt stop. As stated in the lawsuits, this sudden stop caused the brothers to be "thrusted erratically" in their seats, resulting in significant back and neck injuries.
The lawsuits claim that Universal failed to maintain the ride in a reasonably safe condition and neglected to warn guests about dangerous conditions they "knew or should have known" about. The brothers allege they suffered permanent bodily injury, pain and suffering, disability, medical expenses, lost wages, diminished earning capacity, and loss of enjoyment of life.
Allegations of Negligence and Preventable Incidents
Attorney John Morgan, along with attorney John V. Scatuorchio, released a statement asserting the lawsuits aim to hold Universal accountable. “The most important job of a theme park is to keep its guests safe. Instead, Universal allegedly operated a ride that had been plagued by repeated malfunctions, glitches, and hard stops since it opened," the statement said. "Our clients continue to seek treatment for their injuries, which are impacting their everyday lives. They have filed these lawsuits to hold Universal accountable for a safety incident we allege was entirely preventable."

"Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry": A Technological Showcase
"Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry" is a technologically advanced ride that combines large-scale practical sets, projection effects, and dynamic motion. The attraction is designed to create the sensation of traveling through the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Guests ride in 16-person, omnidirectional lifts designed to move up, down, forward, backward, and sideways throughout the experience.
Prior Reports of Ride Interruptions
Even before the lawsuits, reports of ride interruptions and unexpected stops on "Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry" had surfaced on online forums and social media platforms. Some visitors described temporary shutdowns, while others mentioned extended delays or ride vehicles stopping mid-experience. Social media users and online content creators have described similar problems with "Battle at the Ministry" since its debut, including the attraction closing for maintenance on opening day and riders being stranded for extended periods after sudden stops. Reported issues include riders being stranded for 90 minutes or longer after sudden stops.
Universal's Response and Historical Context
Universal has not yet issued an official statement addressing the lawsuits or the reported ride malfunctions. However, the company has historically navigated similar challenges with new attractions. Many rides undergo adjustments during their initial months of operation to optimize performance and safety.
The Broader Context of Ride Safety
The lawsuits against Universal arrive during a period of heightened attention on ride safety at Epic Universe. The situation underscores the reality that even the most advanced attractions can face early challenges.
