The Foley Alternative Learning Center (ALC): A Path to Success

The Foley Alternative Learning Center (ALC) provides a supportive and flexible learning environment for students aged 16-21 in grades 10-12 who may benefit from a non-traditional educational setting. With an enrollment of 15-20 full and part-time students, the ALC offers a personalized approach to education, focusing on individual needs and goals.

Structure and Curriculum

The daily schedule at the Foley ALC consists of five 60-minute class periods, meeting five days per week, from 8:05 am to 2:50 pm. One of these periods is dedicated to teacher preparation, which varies each trimester. Students can enroll in up to four classes per day at the ALC and are also encouraged to participate in mainstream high school courses.

The Foley ALC is a seat-time Alternative Learning Program (ALP) with a possible Work Experience component. Attendance is mandatory on a full-time basis, ensuring students remain engaged and committed to their education. Credits can be earned through traditional classroom instruction or computer-based Independent Study, offering flexibility to accommodate different learning styles and preferences. Students are required to pass the MN competencies in reading, math, and written composition to demonstrate their proficiency in these essential skills.

Enrollment and Support Services

To be eligible for the Foley Alternative program, students must be a minimum of 16 years old and meet other enrollment requirements. A steering committee reviews all applications to determine acceptance. When enrollment is full, eligible applicants are placed on a waiting list based on their high school credits.

Students at the Foley ALC have access to all academic and extracurricular activities offered at Foley High School. Additionally, they can utilize FHS support services, including school guidance and academic counseling, health services, career counseling, and post-secondary education planning, ensuring they receive comprehensive support throughout their educational journey.
