Navigating the University of South Florida Admissions Process for International Students
The University of South Florida (USF) stands as one of Florida's premier research institutions, drawing students from over 140 countries with its robust academic programs and vibrant campus atmosphere. For international students aspiring to join the USF community, understanding the admissions process is the first step toward a fulfilling educational journey. While the competition for admission to USF is intense, the application process itself is designed to be straightforward.
Freshman Application Requirements for International Students
International applicants follow the same freshman application process as all other students, receiving equal and uniform holistic admission review irrespective of their secondary curriculum origin or citizenship. Here's a breakdown of the key components:
Academic Credentials
Applicants must provide at least three full years of their most recent secondary school transcript(s), including courses in progress (grades 9, 10 and 11 + senior schedule) in both the native language of instruction and a word for word certified English translation (if applicable). Unofficial transcripts are accepted electronically via the Gator Portal for the review process, while official transcripts and translations are required upon enrollment.
International students who want to apply as freshmen must show proof that they finished high school with a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
Standardized Test Scores
USF requires freshman applicants to submit official results for at least one college entrance exam (SAT, ACT or CLT). Accepted Test Score Submission: Scores must come directly from SAT, ACT and CLT testing services.

While USF does not mandate specific minimum scores, submitting strong scores can bolster an application. It's advisable to aim for scores above the average range for admitted students. USF does not use the essay section of the SAT or ACT during the admission or scholarship review processes.
Applicants should send their scores well in advance of deadlines, ideally by December, to ensure USF receives them in time for an admissions decision. USF considers the highest section scores across all SAT, ACT and CLT test dates.
Holistic Review
USF conducts a holistic review of all freshman applications. While academic performance is crucial, the admissions committee also evaluates factors such as:
- Course Selection: A challenging high school curriculum, including AP and IB fine and performing arts courses, is viewed favorably.
- Grades: Generally, higher grades are better, particularly in your junior and senior years. Significant performance improvements are unlikely at that point.
- Extracurricular Activities: Participating in activities in high school to gain experience is beneficial.
- Foreign Language: USF typically requires at least two units (years) of instruction in a foreign language. The university provides information on methods to meet this requirement, as well as possible exemptions.
- Overall Presentation: A strong application does more than just meet the minimum requirements. The University of South Florida admissions committee looks for students who are ready for school, motivated, and aware of the world around them.
