Freddie DuBose Enters the Transfer Portal: What's Next for the Former Longhorn?
The Texas Longhorns football program witnessed several roster changes during the spring transfer window. While head coach Steve Sarkisian and his staff adeptly addressed team needs and retained key players, the team also saw a few players depart for new opportunities via the NCAA transfer portal. Among those was wide receiver Freddie Dubose, whose exit has prompted questions about his future and the Longhorns' receiving corps.
DuBose's Departure from Texas
Freddie Dubose officially entered the transfer portal after one season with the Longhorns. His departure became a reality when his name wasn't listed on the team's official spring roster. Prior to this, Bobby Burton of OnTexasFootball reported on March 26 that Dubose was no longer with the program. Dubose himself confirmed his intentions via social media, expressing gratitude for his time in Austin. "Will forever be grateful that I got to experience being a Longhorn but as they say all good things must come to an end," Dubose wrote on X. "Time to find a new home, forever love you Longhorn nation."
A Look Back at DuBose's Recruitment and Time at Texas
Dubose arrived in Austin as a three-star prospect in the 2024 recruiting class. The Smithson Valley product redshirted during his lone season on the Forty Acres due to a knee injury sustained in high school. The 6-foot-1, 187-pound receiver did not appear in a game during the 2024 season. Despite the setback, Dubose's potential was evident, drawing interest from top programs during his high school recruitment.
High School Offers
Out of high school, Dubose drew interest from various schools. He took visits with Texas, Tennessee, UTSA and Texas A&M while receiving offers from programs like Arkansas, Texas Tech, TCU, Utah, Penn State, SMU, Oregon, Baylor, Houston, Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa State, UNLV, Texas State and many more.
Potential Landing Spots and What He Offers
Now in the transfer portal with four years of eligibility, Dubose is seeking a program where he can find more playing time and reach his potential. For teams in need of help offensively, Dubose could be an intriguing option, especially if he can reach his potential. His combination of size and athleticism, which made him a sought-after recruit, remains appealing.

The Longhorns' Wide Receiver Room Moving Forward
While Dubose's Longhorns tenure didn't go as planned, Texas still has plenty of talent in its wide receiver room. The Longhorns are young at receiver entering the 2025 season but there's no shortage of talent. Freshmen wideouts like Michael Terry III, Kaliq Lockett and Jaime Ffrench have continued to impress during spring practice while DeAndre Moore Jr. and Ryan Wingo nurse minor injuries. Texas will be led by veterans Ryan Wingo and DeAndre Moore Jr. Texas will also add a new weapon to the offense in highly regarded freshman Kaliq Lockett. That should give quarterback Arch Manning plenty to work with. Former Texas receiver Silas Bolden expressed confidence in the group, stating, "Last year I seen Wingo, DMO (DeAndre Moore), AB (Aaron Butler), Parker (Livingstone), you know, the young freshmen coming in and the guys that was already here, I feel like they all gonna excel this year, especially with Arch (Manning) at quarterback. I feel like they're gonna do some great things for sure."
Broader Context: Other Texas Transfers
Dubose is one of several players who have entered the transfer portal from Texas recently. To provide a broader picture, here's a brief update on another transfer:
- Johntay Cook (Wide Receiver) - Syracuse: Since the mutual decision for Cook to leave the program back in November, he spent several months making questionable posts on social media, got dismissed from Washington shortly after arriving, and was arrested twice. Cook entered the transfer portal again during the spring window and received interest from Arkansas, BYU, Houston, Indiana, and Oklahoma, visiting Arizona State before committing to Syracause.
