Finance: Finance interns work on financial analysis, risk assessment, and reporting tasks.

Credit Risk: Understanding Freddie Mac’s Credit Risk portfolio through pricing upfront credit risk, handling the non-performing loan portfolio, and structuring and selling Credit Risk Transfer (CRT) transactions.
Market Risk: Learning how Freddie Mac runs its market risk, in interest rate and debt capital markets, mortgage guarantee pipeline, and the MBS securitization business. In this position, you will be supporting portfolio manager activities by digging into data, projects, or desk needs to improve desk functionality or produce analyses that will help the desks make more educated decisions. Gain diverse perspectives working across desks - On one desk an analyst may be asked to help support and execute a transaction, whereas on another desk, you may be identifying trends through data work.

Impact and Contribution

In this position, interns support portfolio manager activities by digging into data, projects, or desk needs in order to improve desk functionality or produce analyses that will help the desks make more educated decisions. As interns rotate, they can use the experience they have picked up to bring different, educated viewpoints to desks that embrace their knowledge and expertise. Throughout their rotations, interns learn not only how the Capital Markets division works and interacts generally with the rest of the firm, but they pick up specific know-how about the desks they work on. The summer will culminate in a final project on a topical concept to your internship or Freddie Mac as a whole, presented to the executive leadership of the program and other heads of desks.

Freddie Mac’s Portfolio Management and Capital Markets Divisions are responsible for handling the ~$2.5 trillion mortgage guarantee and investment portfolios through secondary mortgage market activities such as asset-liability management, loan purchases, servicing transactions, securitization, debt issuance, and credit risk transfer. They provide the cash flow, financing, and capital market expertise that allows the company to achieve its stated mission of providing liquidity to the house market and making home possible.

Program Structure and Duration

Freddie Mac’s internships typically last 10 weeks during the summer. The Capital Markets program consists of two five-week rotations, with at least one rotation on a desk in each of the following two buckets: Credit Risk and Market Risk.

Eligibility and Qualifications

Freddie Mac internships are open to undergraduate and graduate students pursuing degrees in fields such as finance, economics, business, computer science, mathematics, and marketing. Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States without restriction.

Specific qualifications for the Capital Markets Program include:

Minimum cumulative 3.2 GPA
Bachelor’s degree, preferably but not only in Economics, Finance, Business, and Mathematics
Availability to begin internship in May, with expected graduation Fall or Spring

Compensation and Benefits

Interns are paid a set, non-negotiable rate. The hourly rate for the Technology Summer Internship position is \$32/hr. Freddie Mac offers a comprehensive total rewards package to include competitive compensation and market-leading benefit programs. This position has an annualized market-based salary range of \$54,000 - \$82,000.
