Fulton County Board of Education: An Overview

The Fulton County Board of Education plays a crucial role in shaping the educational landscape of Fulton County Schools (FCS). This article provides an overview of the board's structure, responsibilities, and its approach to improving student achievement.

Structure and Membership

The Fulton County Board of Education consists of seven members, each elected by district to serve a four-year term. These are elected officials and not employees of the school system. They do not have individual offices at the school system's Administrative Center. The Superintendent serves as an ex-officio member of the Board and acts as Secretary-Treasurer. Information received at the Administrative Center is sent to the school board members weekly.

Community Engagement

Each member of the Fulton County Board of Education sponsors a monthly meeting (either virtual or face-to-face) open to all members of the community. The sessions provide an opportunity for direct contact with community members and give board members a chance to listen to local issues and concerns. Addressing Achievement Gaps

Today, some FCS schools serve large numbers of low-income students, while others serve few. School communities vary by such characteristics as the number of English language learners, amount of parental support available at home, and special needs populations, to name a few. Achievement also varies. In some schools, almost every student meets or exceeds state math and reading standards, while in others, many do not. Thus, while FCS strategies have pursued over the years have generated some positive results, they have not succeeded in eradicating achievement gaps.

Academic Achievements and Initiatives

Fulton County Schools (FCS) continues to lead Georgia in both ACT participation and performance, surpassing state and national averages for the ninth consecutive year. FCS has returned to pre-pandemic levels of SAT participation and performance, exceeding scores of school districts across the metro Atlanta area. A total of 5,135 students - 5.9% - sat for the exam, the district’s highest number of test takers since 2019. FCS proudly announces its fifth year of breaking graduation records, reaching a new milestone of 91.9%, the highest in the district's history. The last five years, beginning in 2020 when the rate dipped for the first time since 2012, have shown a steady rise in each year's all-time high for a total 6.4% increase.

Special Events and Programs

The air in the gymnasium was thick with anticipation, with more than 150 Ison Springs Elementary School students in attendance. Students at Crabapple Crossing and Summit Hill elementary schools were recently treated to a special performance by GRAMMY award-winning cellist Zuill Bailey, a performing artist who also teaches at the University of Texas El Paso.
