A significant milestone in Furman basketball history occurred when the team achieved its first national ranking. The Paladins earned the ranking after an impressive 8-0 start, a feat unmatched in the program's 106-year history of men’s basketball.
The team's remarkable run included a stunning 76-68 victory over No. 8 and defending national champion Villanova on Nov. 17 and a narrow 60-58 win against Loyola Chicago, another 2018 Final Four participant, on Nov. In between those games, Jordan Lyons ’20 tied the NCAA Division I record by hitting 15 3-pointers and scoring 54 points in 107-67 win over North Greenville. Furman, one of 11 remaining unbeaten NCAA Division I teams, also becomes the first Southern Conference school to be ranked since former member Davidson was 22nd on Dec.

2023 NCAA Tournament Run
The 2023 season was particularly memorable for the Paladins. After claiming the Southern Conference regular season title with a 15-3 league record, they triumphed over Chattanooga, 88-79, on March 6 in Asheville, North Carolina, securing their first SoCon Tournament title in 43 years.
As a No. 13 seed in the NCAA Tournament, Furman achieved a remarkable upset, defeating No. 4 seed Virginia, 68-67, in the first round. Although their tournament journey ended with a loss on March 18, the victory over Virginia remains a historic moment for the program.
Coach Bob Richey's Impact
Under the leadership of head coach Bob Richey, the Furman basketball program has experienced significant success. Heading into the tournament, in six years as the Paladins’ head coach, Richey had posted a 138-53 overall record and gone 78-27 in the SoCon. Richey has guided the team to new heights, including the SoCon Tournament title and the NCAA Tournament appearance in 2023.
“It’s an unbelievable story, and I couldn’t be more proud of our team, at a time where I’m extremely disappointed we didn’t advance,” said head coach Bob Richey. “But it’s really hard to not pull the lens back a little bit and still see what that group was able to accomplish.
