The Breen Student Union: A Legacy of Giving Back
The Breen Student Union stands as a testament to the commitment and generosity of Ed ’78 and Lynn '78 (Branstner) Breen, both alumni who were deeply involved in campus life during their time at Grove City College. Lynn, an economics major, was actively involved in Chapel Choir and the Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority. Ed studied economics and business and was a member of the Beta Sigma fraternity and the wrestling team. Their contributions to the college extend beyond their student years, culminating in a significant donation that led to the naming and rededication of the Breen Student Union in May 2007.
Ed Breen's career trajectory following graduation is a story of success and leadership. After joining General Instruments and subsequently Motorola after the companies merged, Ed quickly rose through the ranks. In January of 2000, he was named the company’s executive vice president and president of the broadband communications sector. His leadership was instrumental in turning the company around, leading to increased revenue and improved employee morale.
In January 2007, the Breens demonstrated their unwavering support for Grove City College with a generous $5.5 million donation to the Change & Commitment Campaign. This substantial gift played a crucial role in closing the college's $68 million campaign. Ed has been on the Grove City College Board of Trustees since 2001, further demonstrating his dedication to the institution. The Breens currently reside in New Hope, Pa.
The Breen Student Union, built in 2004 and named in honor of Ed and Lynn Breen in 2007, is one of Grove City College’s busiest spots.

A Space for Connection and Community
The Breen Student Union embodies a blend of aesthetic appeal and practical functionality. A striking bay of windows forms a wall of the great hall, complemented by a cathedral ceiling and a second-floor gallery accessible via a grand staircase. This welcoming space serves as a central gathering point for students to eat, study, and socialize.
The Breen Student Union's predecessor, the Gedunk, holds a special place in the college's history. Following the Second World War, the influx of veterans through the G.I. Bill brought a new dynamic to the campus. Gedunk was a term used in the Navy for the canteen or snack bar on a ship and it stuck when it was applied to the Fountain Room in Alumni Hall, which then served as a student activity center. For 50 years, the Gedunk or Gee was THE place to be on campus. That energy moved to the new Gedunk when Breen opened.
Supporting Student Life and Activities
Beyond providing a physical space for students to connect, the GCC Student Union plays a vital role in supporting a wide range of student organizations and activities. Grove City College boasts more than 130 student organizations, catering to diverse interests and passions. The Student Union serves as a hub for these organizations, providing meeting spaces, resources, and a platform for promoting their activities.
Campus Activities Board (CAB)
The Campus Activities Board, also known as CAB, collaborates closely with the Student Government Association (SGA) to plan, fund, and execute a variety of activities on campus. All students are welcome to attend CAB meetings to discuss upcoming events, suggest entertainers, and brainstorm new activities for the campus community. CAB sponsors several special event programs throughout the academic year, ranging from hosting professional comedians, musicians, magicians, hypnotists, or novelty groups, to game nights and DIY activities.
Arab Student Union (ASU)
The Arab Student Union (ASU) is a student organization dedicated to celebrating, promoting, and educating the student body about Arabic culture, traditions, and heritage. The club strives to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for students of Arab descent, as well as those interested in learning about Arabic culture. The ASU's goal is to foster cultural awareness, encourage social connections, and support academic and personal development among its members.
