Understanding the George J. Mitchell Scholarship: Requirements and Opportunities
The George J. Mitchell Scholarship Program, sponsored by the US-Ireland Alliance, is a prestigious national fellowship designed to connect future American leaders with the island of Ireland. The scholarship recognizes and fosters intellectual achievement, leadership, and a commitment to public service and community. Eligibility Criteria
The Mitchell Scholarships are open to individuals between the ages of 18 and 30 who are US citizens and have shown academic distinction, commitment to community and leadership potential. Candidates must be 18 years of age or older, but not yet 30, on September 30 of the year of application. They must have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university before beginning study as a Mitchell Scholar.
Key eligibility requirements include:
- Age: Applicants must be between 18 and 30 years old by September 30th of the application year.
- Citizenship: Applicants must be US citizens.
- Education: Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university before starting their studies as a Mitchell Scholar.
- GPA: Must have a minimum 3.7 cumulative GPA at the time of campus nomination (May each year); this is not negotiable.
While married applicants or applicants with partners are accepted, no allowance is made for the expenses of an applicant’s spouse, partner, or dependents.

Nomination Process
IMPORTANT: All candidates for Mitchell Scholarships must be nominated by their college or university. Please contact the National Scholarships Office for information about the University of Maryland nomination process.
Undergraduate applicants must be endorsed by the Office of Distinguished Scholarships in order to apply for the Mitchell Scholarship. To be considered for nomination, senior undergraduates must submit a complete campus application to the UAA Office by the campus deadline (see section below). The campus committee reviews applications and selects nominees. Nominees complete and submit the official Mitchell online application, which includes a video interview, by the national deadline in September. on the campus deadline. This is the campus application to be considered for nomination for the Rhodes, Marshall, Mitchell, and/or Churchill scholarships. You can apply to be nominated for more than one scholarship.
Campus Application Requirements
For the campus application (required for current undergraduates only), recommenders can submit one “combined” letter, recommending you for all the scholarships for which you are applying. Items 2-5 below will be submitted via the online campus application form (link below). Please note: You should be able to leave the online application and re-enter to finish it later from the same computer. Or you can plan your responses using the 2023 campus application PDF and then complete the online application in one sitting.
The campus application typically includes the following:
- Personal Statement: A personal statement (no more than 750 words) describing your academic and other interests. Help the reader understand who you are and how your academic passions and future goals have evolved. Reflect on and analyze some of the significant activities/experiences that have shaped you.
- Résumé/CV: A “Résumé” or CV (two pages, no smaller than 11 pt font) Organize your résumé/CV to showcase your strengths. Common headings include: education (universities attended, majors, degrees earned); research; presentations and publications; awards, scholarships, and honors; service/volunteerism; employment and internships; other activities/interests. Emphasize your leadership experiences. Please do not include a photograph in your resume.
- Proposed Academic Program Essay(s): For each scholarship you check on the application form, write an essay (no more than 350 words each) concisely explaining your reasons for wishing to pursue your first choice academic program(s) and university, and how this course of study fits in your academic trajectory.
- Letters of Recommendation: Letters of recommendation at least four for the Mitchell Scholarship. For full-time undergraduate students, at least two of the four letters must be from persons with whom the applicant has done academic work. For those who are not full-time students and have not been for the past year, at least one of the letters must be from someone with whom the applicant has done academic work.
Selection Criteria
Applicants are judged on three criteria: scholarship, leadership, and a sustained commitment to community and public service. The Mitchell Scholarship looks for persuasive, documented evidence of significant achievement in three areas: academic, leadership, and commitment to community and service.

The program seeks individuals who can:
- Provide a specific argument for why they must pursue their chosen graduate program(s) in Ireland or N.
- Provide a specific argument for why it is paramount to their studies and future vocation that they pursue their studies in Ireland or N.
- Ability to argue for their selected graduate programs in specific terms and why they must pursue that training in Ireland or N.
- Demonstrate academic distinction.
- Demonstrate leadership potential.
- Demonstrate a commitment to community and public service.
Scholarship Award Details
The US-Ireland Alliance Scholarship Program provides tuition, accommodation, and a stipend for living expenses and travel. The scholarship covers September through May of an academic year. The Mitchell Scholarship Program provides funding for a one-year master’s degree. Most programs run for nine months. The award covers tuition and room charges and provides a stipend plus an allowance for travel in Ireland, the United Kingdom, and Europe.
Up to twelve US-Ireland Alliance Scholars between the ages of 18 and 30 are chosen annually for one academic year of postgraduate study in any discipline offered by institutions of higher learning in Ireland and Northern Ireland. George J. Mitchell Scholarships support one year of study at one of nine universities in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.
Important Considerations for Applicants
Applicants may apply for multiple scholarship awards simultaneously, including the Rhodes, Marshall, and Mitchell Scholarships. Notice: If you are a selected as a Mitchell Finalist, you must withdraw applications for the Rhodes & Marshall. Schedule a meeting with the ODS director to discuss your application and receive advice to consider as you prepare for the endorsement deadline.
Preference will be for all documents to be sent in one singular PDF. Campus interviews are required for all candidates. Times will be identified for interviews based on your class schedule and committee availability. Interviews will take place in late September. Complete final application submission by Sept. 24, 2023.
