Navigating Student Visa Requirements at George Mason University
For international students aspiring to study at George Mason University (GMU), understanding the intricacies of student visa requirements is crucial. This article aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the necessary steps and considerations for obtaining and maintaining an F-1 student visa, with particular attention to updates and potential challenges.
Initial Visa Application and Required Documentation
The journey begins with a thorough application process. International applicants must demonstrate English proficiency, regardless of citizenship or visa status, and submit required documents to have your application reviewed by the admissions committee. A passing test score is required to have your application reviewed by our admissions committee. It's important to note that GMU does not waive this requirement based on the language of instruction but offers waivers based on the country where the university is located.
Key documents for the visa application include:
- Valid Passport: Ensures your identity and nationality.
- Online Visa Application (DS-160): A mandatory form to be completed accurately.
- I-20 Form: A Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student Status, issued by GMU after admission and financial verification.
- SEVIS I-901 Fee Payment: This fee must be paid at least three business days before the visa interview.
- Visa Application Fee: A standard fee for processing the visa application.
- Financial Documentation: Evidence of sufficient funds to cover tuition, living expenses, and other costs. The Certificate of Financial Responsibility (CFR) form provides important information needed to prepare the I-20 document for your student visa. Individuals (parents, brothers, uncles, etc.) listed on the Certificate of Financial Responsibility, as the source of funding for the student, should provide original bank statements. Bank statements should be dated within the past twelve months, be from an individual account, and show funds that are immediately accessible and transferable. Credit card statements, business accounts, property value documents, solvency statements, statements of income, and insurance policies may not be submitted as sources of financial verification. Photocopies, faxes, and scanned documents are accepted.
- Transcripts and Diploma/Degree Certificate: If you have studied internationally, GMU needs to have your transcripts and diploma/degree certificate evaluated. Students may submit their documents to any NACES member organization at their own expense for expedited service. GMU requires that you upload both your transcript and diploma/degree certificate in English and original language, if applicable.
Other documents may be required by the consulate, and your plans for returning to your country.
Maintaining F-1 Status at GMU
Once you arrive at GMU on an F-1 visa, maintaining your legal status requires adherence to specific regulations.

- Full-Time Enrollment: You are required to enroll full-time (9 credits for most graduate students, 12 credits for undergraduates).
- Online Course Limitations: F-1 students at GMU can take only one online course (or three credits) toward their full-time enrollment requirements each semester.
- I-20 Updates: If you've completed your INTO Mason program and hope to earn a Mason degree, you must update your I-20. If you are transferring to Mason from another education institution, you must also submit an I-20 application request.
- Address Reporting: Report any change in your off-campus address within 10 days of moving. You are not required to make changes if you live on-campus since your address will automatically update in Patriotweb.
- Travel Requirements: If you travel outside of the U.S, in addition to having a valid passport and visa, make sure that you have a valid travel signature on your I-20 to re-enter.
Travel Considerations and Potential Restrictions
International students should be aware of potential travel restrictions and security measures.
- Travel Ban Information (as of January 1, 2026): On December 16, 2025, the United States Government issued an updated travel ban for citizens from certain countries. As of January 1, 2026, the travel ban does not apply to students who have a valid visa. If you are a citizen of one of the countries on the travel ban list but would like to travel and return, be prepared for additional screening, including searches of your electronic devices.
- Customs and Border Protection (CBP): CBP has the authority to deny entry to any traveler. Additionally, CBP officers are permitted to search electronic devices upon entry. F1 students should have an I-20 with Travel Signature on page 2.
- Visa Renewal: If you are a citizen of one of the countries on the travel ban list with an expired visa, the travel ban may not officially apply to you. Be prepared for additional screening, including searches of your electronic devices. Visa News webpage to see if there is an announcement about the January 1, 2026 travel ban. Be prepared for additional screening, including searches of your electronic devices. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) or denial of visa renewal under the terms of the ban.
Optional Practical Training (OPT)
Optional Practical Training (OPT) is a valuable opportunity for F-1 students to gain work experience related to their field of study. When you first begin work on OPT, you must notify OIPS of your employer so that the information can be uploaded into SEVIS. Thereafter, any time you change employers, you must submit an update to OIPS. Second, if you do not enter the name of your employer when you first start OPT employment, the field will be blank in SEVIS. If it remains blank for 90 days, your OPT employment authorization will be automatically terminated without notice to you, because SEVP will assume that you have no employer.
Social Media and Visa Applications
Reports indicate that visa pauses ended mid-June 2025 and resumed with increased social media screening. You are required to provide information on your social media accounts on the DS-160 visa application. Additionally, you may be asked about your social media accounts during your visa interview. Ultimately, you need to decide what information you choose to disclose. If you are concerned about the content of your social media presence, consider speaking to an immigration attorney before taking additional action. Keep in mind that failing to provide information about your social media accounts could result in the perception that you are hiding information, especially since the consulate may be able to find out if you do have an account. Be certain to provide an accurate spelling of your full name and other information used to identify you. This will help minimize mistakes in associating you with the wrong social medial accounts.
Important Reminders for Entering the U.S.
- The Customs officer will ask to see your documents (valid I-20, F-1 visa, and passport).
- You should show the Customs official the most recent I-20 issued to you by OIPS. The I-20 should match the information in the SEVIS system.
- Your entry needs to be recorded on your current SEVIS record and current matching I-20. Show the official your most recent I-20. Tell the official that your F1 visa has a different SEVIS number but is still valid and that you were issued a new I-20 with a new SEVIS number.
- You can print out a copy of your I-94 here. Click on the blue Get Most Recent I-94 box and enter your information. Then, click on Next to see and print your I-94.
