Navigating Gonzaga University Admissions: GPA, SAT/ACT, and Holistic Review

While there isn't a strict minimum GPA requirement, a strong GPA is undoubtedly a very important academic factor. The average GPA of admitted students is around 3.66, suggesting that successful applicants generally have a mix of A's and B's, with a leaning toward A's. The GPA range for admitted students is as follows:
- 3.75+: 47.75%
- 3.50-3.74: 24.96%
- 3.25-3.49: 16.83%
- 3.00-3.24: 7.97%
- 2.50-2.99: 2.49%
- 2.00-2.49: Less than 1%

For transfer students, Gonzaga University requires a cumulative college GPA of 2.7 or better, both cumulatively and in the most recent term. Additionally, transfer applicants must be in good standing at their current or most recent institution.

Gonzaga University emphasizes a holistic approach to admission, carefully considering various factors beyond just GPA and test scores. These factors include:
- Curriculum and School: The rigor of your high school coursework and the reputation of your school are taken into account. As a first-year applicant, you are expected to graduate from an accredited high school with a college preparatory curriculum while showing evidence of ability to complete the University's requirements for graduation. Students with college credit taken BEFORE high school graduation (e.g. Running Start) should apply as a First-Year student.
- Grade Point Average and Grade Trends: Your GPA and the trend of your grades over time are evaluated.
- College Essay: The essay provides an opportunity to showcase your writing skills, personality, and unique experiences. The Common App will ask you to complete a few different aspects, including an essay between 250 and 650 words. Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. Reflect on a time when you questioned or challenged a belief or idea. What prompted your thinking? Reflect on something that someone has done for you that has made you happy or thankful in a surprising way. Describe a topic, idea, or concept you find so engaging that it makes you lose all track of time. Why does it captivate you? Share an essay on any topic of your choice.
- Activities: Your involvement in extracurricular activities demonstrates your interests, passions, and leadership potential.
- Character: Gonzaga seeks students who embody its values of dedication to human dignity, social justice, diversity, global engagement, solidarity with the vulnerable, and environmental stewardship.
Application Components and Deadlines
To complete a first-year application to Gonzaga, students must submit the following:
- The Common Application for Undergraduate College Admission online.
- An essay and short answer supplemental question.
- One Teacher Evaluation and one School Report through the Common Application.
- Official transcripts sent to the Office of Admission.
- A $60 non-refundable application fee (waivers available for GU Alumni and ROTC Scholarship applicants).
The application deadline at Gonzaga University is February 1. Course registration for fall transfers begins in early May.
Supplemental Essay Question

- Nursing Program: Gonzaga's undergraduate Nursing program is highly competitive and only accepts first-year applications. Applicants must apply Early Action (November 15) and choose "nursing" on their application to be considered. Students are not permitted to change their major to nursing after enrolling at the University. Nursing applicants are required to submit an additional short answer question: What experiences have led you to choose the field of nursing?
- Post-Baccalaureate Students: Applicants who have earned a bachelor degree previously and wish to pursue a second undergraduate degree may apply to Gonzaga using the transfer admission process. A minimum of 30 semester credits must be completed in residence to qualify for a Gonzaga degree. Post-bac applicants are not eligible for institutional aid, but may be eligible for FAFSA funding.
- Disciplinary and Criminal History: Gonzaga University does ask whether an applicant has a school disciplinary record or criminal history. An applicant will not automatically or unreasonably be denied admission due to criminal history or disciplinary action.
