The Best Books to Learn French

Learning French can be an enriching experience, opening doors to a new culture and way of life. Depending on individual levels and objectives, selecting the right resources, especially books, is essential for progress. Navigating the multitude of options offered by publishers to identify the best books can be challenging. This article provides recommendations for both beginners and intermediate learners, spanning various genres, to help you find something you'll genuinely enjoy reading.

Understanding the Learning Process

Behavioral psychology reveals that there’s an optimal level of stress to have when learning, a level that will boost your retention and keep you engaged. The Yerkes-Dodson Curve maps the relationship between performance and stress. If you get more stressed than that, you’ll start to feel anxious, frustrated, or totally burnt out. And if you get less stressed, then you’ll get bored and disengage.

To stay at an optimal stress level, you want to find books where you understand around 85-95% of the words you encounter. That’s around the spot where you can figure out most new words from their context alone, and you’ll still be able to follow the plot despite the words you don’t understand. The tricky thing about these books is that they’re hard to find; after all, how are you supposed to browse through all of Amazon to find the books that are at your level and are actually interesting to you?

Strategic Reading for Language Acquisition

If you’re going to be strategic about this, you’re aiming to get yourself into a position where you can read a long book series for fun: something like the Narnia, Percy Jackson, or Harry Potter series. If you can get through one book in a series like those, then you’ll be able to enjoy the rest of that series, and by the end of that, you’ll be in a position to read basically anything you’d like. The difficulty is that if you’re starting out, you’re likely not at the level needed to get through the first book in any of those series.

Initial Paths for Beginners

There are three paths for you to play around with: short stories, comic books, and longer form kid’s books. The short stories are really built for adults learning French, and I feel like they’ll be your easiest path into reading.

Utilizing Familiarity at the Intermediate Level

At the intermediate level, you should also be able to handle French translations of book series you’ve enjoyed in English, and that’s often a good way to jump in, as you’ll already be familiar with the plots and as such, you’ll have an easier time keeping track of things. To find the right title to search for on Amazon, first look up your target book series on Wikipedia, and then swap the page to your target language.

Remember, you’re going to learn best by picking something that’s in a genre you actually enjoy reading. Don’t feel compelled to go to The Classics or The Greats; if trashy romance is your thing, go do your thing.

Grammar and Vocabulary Essentials

Top Grammar Books

  • Bescherelle: A veritable French institution since 1913, the Bescherelle series includes the collective work La conjugaison pour Tous (Conjugation for Everyone), published by Hatier, as well as shorter publications devoted to spelling, vocabulary and so on. Easily identified by any French schoolchild thanks to its red covers, the series was created by the nineteenth century by two famous grammarians, Louis-Nicolas and Henri Bescherelle. Bescherelle is renowned for its verb conjugation tables, mind maps and lists of reference verbs that can be used to conjugate other verbs. With more than 8,000 verbs included, it’s clear to see why Bescherelle is so successful!
  • La Grammaire progressive du français (A Progressive Grammar of the French Language): Written by Maïa Grégoire and Odile Thievenaz, La Grammaire progressive du français (A Progressive Grammar of the French Language), published by Clé International, is one of the best books for learning French grammar and is aimed at those who want to improve their skills. The book benefits from vibrant presentation: the lesson, on the left-hand page, is followed by exercises that put it into practice on the next page. The most recent edition includes nearly 150 self-marked tests and almost 300 interactive exercises online. The book’s strength is its clear, structured approach, which explains why many teachers use it in their lessons. It is also well-suited to self-taught learners and is available for all levels.

Vocabulary Enhancement

  • Vocabulaire en Dialogues by Évelyn Siréjols: This is another dialogue book published by CLE International. I like the book because it lays out chapter-by-chapter a very useful resource for leaning the most essential and basic French vocabulary. The chapters are broken down into categories such as food, clothing, sports, shopping, weather, etc. A beginners French course would not be complete without going over these lists of words. Again, I feel that this book is best used with a teacher because the explanations are in French. It does provide lots of exercises and comes with an CD for audio.

Comprehensive Learning Systems

  • Practice Makes Perfect: Complete French All-in-One by Annie Heminway: Considered a comprehensive resource for beginner and intermediate students, this book lays out French grammar in a methodical and logical way. It covers grammar, verb conjugations, vocabulary, conversation, and written French, making it suitable for both initial learning stages and more advanced study. The book is also excellent for self-study as it provides lots of exercises in each chapter.

  • Ultimate French Review and Practice by David Stillman and Ronni Gordon: As an excellent companion to the Complete French All-in-One, this book offers slightly more nuanced explanations of grammar and verb conjugations. It includes many exercises for each chapter, ideal for self-study, and comes with an interactive CD-ROM with audio.

Dialogue-Based Learning

  • Grammaire en Dialogues - Niveau Grand Débutant by Odile Grand-Clément: This book effectively matches pertinent, real-life dialogues to basic French grammar. Each dialogue is followed by brief explanations and exercises. While it is best used with a teacher due to the brief explanations and fast speech on the CD, it is a valuable tool for practicing speaking and repetition.

  • Communication Progressive du Français A2-B1 by Claire Miquel: This dialogue book focuses on specific grammar areas, such as reflexive verbs or object pronouns, and covers many aspects of daily life, including making purchases and socializing. It is particularly useful after completing the Complete French All-In-One book.

Pronunciation Practice

  • Les 500 exercices de phonétique (500 Phonetics Exercises), by Dominique Abry and Marie-Laure Chalaron: This book offers activities for pronunciation practice. Students will also find exercises to improve their intonation, activities that focus on the link between sounds and written letters, dictation exercises and so on. It is available for students at A1/A2 and B1/B2 level and comes with a CD of MP3 audio files.

  • Exercises in French Phonics by Francis W. Nachtmann: This book meticulously breaks down all the French phonetic rules into concise chapters. Each chapter covers a single spelling pattern and provides a long list of corresponding words along with exercises. The book puts a heavy emphasis on the French phonetic symbols.

Reading Practice

  • Read & Think French: This book is definitely aimed at mid-intermediate or higher students. The book consists of more than 100 articles which help students to better understand live in France and in the French-speaking world. The articles were provided by the editors of Think French magazine. The books sections include culture, travel, traditions, celebrations, biographies, customs, art, history, geography and cuisine. The publisher does a wonderful job providing translations to vocabulary in the margin.

Additional Resources

  • French For Dummies All-In-One: This book provide a huge introduction to basic vocabulary combined with lots of practical dialogues. While I strongly suggest students to master the reading rules, the book provides lots of English phonetics for all the words and dialogues. This is a huge plus for people who are too lazy to buckle down and learn the reading rules. The French For Dummies All-in-One book does include a CD including some audio for dialogues in both French and French-Canadian accents.

  • Berlitz Self-Teacher: French (Berlitz Editors): This short book devoted to French from the famous American publisher includes lots of activities to help learners communicate in everyday situations.
