Navigating Cal State Fullerton Admissions: GPA, Test Scores, and Requirements

Cal State Fullerton (CSUF) is a popular choice for students seeking higher education in Southern California. Understanding the university's admission requirements, particularly the GPA expectations and standardized testing policies, is crucial for prospective students. Understanding Cal State Fullerton's Acceptance Rate

The acceptance rate is a primary factor to consider. Cal State Fullerton has a relatively high acceptance rate of 90.5%, indicating a nearly open admissions policy. This suggests that the university accepts most applicants who meet the minimum requirements. However, meeting the minimum requirements doesn't guarantee admission, especially for impacted programs.

GPA Requirements for Cal State Fullerton

While the university doesn't explicitly state a minimum GPA, the average GPA of admitted students is 3.43. This suggests that successful applicants typically have a mix of A's and B's in their high school coursework, with very few C's. A GPA around the average indicates that you are around average in your high school class.

GPA Considerations for Transfers

For transfer students, Cal State Fullerton requires a minimum GPA of 2.0 or higher in at least 60 transferable semester units (90 quarter units). Standardized Testing: SAT and ACT

Cal State Fullerton hasn't explicitly named a policy on SAT/ACT requirements, but because it's published average SAT or ACT scores, it's likely test flexible. Typically, these schools say, "if you feel your SAT or ACT score represents you well as a student, submit them. Despite this policy, the truth is that most students still take the SAT or ACT, and most applicants to Cal State Fullerton will submit their scores. If you don't submit scores, you'll have one fewer dimension to show that you're worthy of being admitted, compared to other students.

SAT Scores

The 25th percentile SAT score is 860, and the 75th percentile SAT score is 1070. Aiming for a score within this range will increase your chances of admission.

Superscoring

Cal State Fullerton does superscore the SAT. This means that the university will consider your highest section scores from multiple test dates, combining them to create your best possible composite score. This allows you to focus on improving individual section scores and submit only the tests that contribute to your highest superscore. If your SAT superscore is currently below a 860, it is strongly recommended that you consider prepping for the SAT and retaking it. Even better, because of the Superscore, you can focus all your energy on a single section at a time. If your Reading score is lower than your other sections, prep only for the Reading section, then take the SAT. Then focus on Math for the next test, and so on.

ACT Scores

The average ACT score at Cal State Fullerton is 25. The 25th percentile ACT score is 22, and the 75th percentile ACT score is 30.

ACT Policy

When you send ACT scores to colleges, you have absolute control over which tests you send. You could take 10 tests, and only send your highest one.

Additional Admission Requirements

Beyond GPA and test scores, Cal State Fullerton considers several other factors in the admission process:

Coursework

The CSU requires that first-time freshman applicants complete, with grades of C- or better, a comprehensive pattern of college preparatory study totaling 15 units. The CSU expects and assumes that high school Pass (Credit) grades will represent work completed at the “C-” or higher level.

Impaction

Cal State Fullerton is an impacted campus for all first-time freshmen and transfer students. Impaction means that there are more eligible applications for a university than can be accommodated. In order to ensure that capacity is not exceeded, more rigorous standards are applied to the freshman applicant pool. This means that all freshman applicants, whether in our local admissions area or outside of our local admissions area, must anticipate meeting higher levels of competition than the minimum Multi-Factor Admissions Score required by the non-impacted CSUs.

Local Admissions Area

The local area for Cal State Fullerton includes all Orange County community colleges. Students must have earned their majority of units from an Orange County community college to be considered a local applicant.

Golden Four

CSU general education requirements (“Golden Four”) are designated as oral communication, written communication, critical thinking and mathematics/quantitative reasoning. Transfer applicants applying for fall term must complete the Golden Four courses no later than the end of the spring term preceeding their start at CSUF. Transfer applicants applying for the spring term must complete the Golden Four courses no later than the end of the summer term preceeding their start at CSUF.

Associate Degree for Transfer (AA-T or AS-T)

CCC students who earn an Associate Degree for Transfer (AA-T or AS-T) are guaranteed admission with junior standing to a CSU and given priority admission consideration over other transfer applicants when applying to a local CSU or non-impacted CSU program. Students who have completed an AA-T/AS-T in a program deemed similar to a CSU major are able to complete remaining requirements for graduation within 60 semester (90 quarter) units. It is the responsibility of the student who has earned an AA-T/AS-T to provide documentation of the degree to the CSU.

Provisional Admission

Cal State Fullerton may provisionally or conditionally admit transfer applicants based on their academic preparation and courses planned for completion. The university will monitor the final terms to ensure that those admitted complete all required courses satisfactorily. All accepted applicants are required to submit an official transcript of all college-level work completed. CSUs may rescind admission for any student who is found to be ineligible after the final transcript has been evaluated.

English Language Proficiency

All applicants, regardless of citizenship, whose native language is other than English are required to present scores for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) before they can be admitted to the university unless they have attended for at least three years, full-time, an educational institution at the secondary level or above where English is the principal language of instruction. Undergraduate applicants must achieve a score of 500 on the paper-based TOEFL exam or 61 on the internet TOEFL; graduate applicants or second B.A. degree applicants a score of 550 on the paper-based exam or 80 on the internet TOEFL; graduate music applicants 560 or 83, respectively; MBA applicants 570 or 88, respectively; and graduate TESOL applicants a score of 573 or 89, respectively. Adequate performance on the TOEFL is mandatory for admission. We accept test results from the IELTS exam.

Health Requirements

All new students who will be 18 years of age or younger at the start of their first term at a CSU campus must provide proof of full immunization against Hepatitis B before enrolling. All incoming students must complete a Tuberculosis risk questionnaire.

Residency

Generally, establishing California residency for tuition purposes requires a combination of physical presence and intent to remain indefinitely in the State of California.

Appeals

Application Process

Complete the application: Designate CSU, Fullerton as your institution of choice.
Submit transcripts: Request required transcripts of records of all previous scholastic work from each school or college attended.
Submit test scores: All first-time freshmen applicants are required to submit scores from either one of two national testing programs before eligibility for admission to the university can be determined.
International Students: International student applicants must include a statement of financial support accompanied by a bank statement from their sponsor. Transcripts of all educational documents in languages other than English must be accompanied by translation into English certified by independent agencies.
