The Story Behind the "2.7 GPA" License Plate: More Than Meets the Eye
The tale of the "2.7 GPA" license plate spotted on a black Ferrari in Austin, Texas, has captured the imagination of car enthusiasts and internet users alike. Originating from a Reddit thread that went viral, the vanity plate sparked curiosity and speculation, prompting questions like, "Is this for real?" and "Was this just a stunt?" But the story behind this seemingly simple license plate is more profound than one might expect.
The Owner's Journey: From Delinquency to CEO
The owner of the "2.7 GPA" Ferrari, who wishes to remain anonymous, shared his inspiring story in an exclusive interview. Growing up in Austin, Texas, as a child of divorce, he described himself as a "juvenile delinquent" who dropped out of school at 16. In 1995, he moved to Dallas to work on his family's cattle ranch, where the hot, dirty, and minimum-wage labor motivated him to seek a better future.
With the encouragement of friends, he enrolled in a small Christian college, initially intending to transfer to a "real school" after a year or two. However, he developed a desire to attend law school, a goal that seemed unattainable with his 2.7 GPA. Despite the odds, he applied to several schools and was accepted.
Years later, he became the CEO of a group of five companies while still practicing law. As a "smart ass" who has a Ferrari, he wanted to find a cool vanity plate for his newly-purchased black 458 Italia. Despite considering options like "douchebag," he ultimately chose "2.7 GPA" as a reminder of his past struggles and a testament to his accomplishments.
The Impact of the License Plate
The "2.7 GPA" license plate has garnered mostly positive attention. The owner recounts an encounter with a well-dressed young man who approached him, seeking direction. The story behind that encounter is best told by the young man himself, should their paths cross again.

From Tragedy to Remembrance: The 1993 World Trade Center Bombing
While the "2.7 GPA" license plate offers a personal narrative of perseverance, the initials "GPA" can also be associated with more somber events. Considering events such as the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, where the use of license plates played a crucial role in identifying the perpetrators, further contextualizes the use of personalized plates.
On February 26, 1993, a terrorist attack struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center in New York City. Ramzi Yousef and his accomplices detonated a van bomb in the building's underground parking garage, intending to bring down both towers and kill tens of thousands of people. The attack was planned by a group of terrorists including Ramzi Yousef, Ahmed Ajaj, Mahmud Abouhalima, Mohammed A. Salameh, Eyad Ismoil, Nidal Ayyad, and Abdul Rahman Yasin.
The 1,336-pound (606 kg) urea nitrate-hydrogen gas enhanced device was intended to make the North Tower collapse onto the South Tower, taking down both skyscrapers and killing tens of thousands of people.
The bomb instantly cut off the World Trade Center's main electrical power line, knocking out the emergency lighting system. The bomb caused smoke to rise to the 93rd floor of both towers, including through the stairwells (which were not pressurized), and smoke went up the damaged elevators in both towers. With thick smoke filling the stairwells, evacuation was difficult for building occupants and led to many smoke inhalation injuries. Six people were killed: five Port Authority employees, one of whom was pregnant, and a businessman whose car was in the parking garage. Additionally, over 1,000 people were injured, most during the evacuation that followed the blast.
The Role of the License Plate in the Investigation
In the aftermath of the bombing, investigators from the ATF, FBI, and NYPD worked to determine the cause and identify those responsible. Amidst the rubble in the underground parking area, Bomb Squad Detective Donald Sadowy of the New York City Police Department discovered fragments of the vehicle used to deliver the bomb.

Detective Sadowy, an automotive specialist, played a crucial role in discovering the license plate number. A vehicle identification number (VIN) found on a piece from an axle led investigators to a Ryder van rented from DIB Leasing in Jersey City. They found the number of the yellow Ford Econoline Ryder van, XA 70668, on an Alabama number plate. According to the FBI's National Crime Information Center computer, the Ford Econoline had been reported stolen in Jersey City on February 25, one day before the bombing. Investigators determined that Mohammed A. Salameh rented the vehicle.
The Aftermath and Legacy
In March 1994, Salameh, Nidal Ayyad, Mahmud Abouhalima, and Ahmad Ajaj were convicted in the World Trade Center bombing and sentenced to 240 years in prison in May 1994. The South Tower reopened to tenants on March 18, 1993, while the North Tower remained closed until April 1, 1993. The cost to repair both buildings was estimated at $250 million.
The Vista International Hotel at 3 World Trade Center remained closed until November 1, 1994, after extensive repairs and renovations that amounted to $65 million. The concourse level was reopened on March 27, 1993, while the parking garage reopened on September 1, 1993, for some government employee's vehicles.
The bombing prompted the World Trade Center and its tenants to revamp emergency procedures, with the New York Port Authority governing security for the buildings. All packages were scanned at checkpoints before being sent to their destinations.
