The Grad Student Tsukki Guide: Navigating Relationships, Misconceptions, and Character Depths

This guide explores the complexities of Tsukishima Kei's character, his relationships, and common misinterpretations within the Haikyuu fandom. It delves into his development, addresses misconceptions about his personality, and examines his dynamics with other characters, particularly Yamaguchi Tadashi.

Tsukishima's Character Development: Beyond the Salty Facade

Tsukishima is not just a salty french fry who looks down on everyone besides Yamaguchi. Tsukki is one of those characters with the best character development. Before fully understanding Tsukishima, some perceive him as an unmotivated jerk. However, his character is better understood after learning how the person he looked up to, Akiteru, lied to him and made his idea of "working hard to get you anywhere" fall apart. This boy went from someone who only saw "Volleyball" as a club activity to something he could actually put effort into. That’s right, he tries. This boy does tries.

Addressing Misconceptions: Beyond the Surface

It's crucial to move beyond superficial interpretations and recognize the depth and nuance in these characters.

  • Oikawa: Oikawa is often mischaracterized as a whiny crybaby. He is actually a strong guy who is dedicated to the thing he loves and ensures his teammates can play to the best of their ability. He is very capable of destroying someone if he wishes. His serves are powerful, and even Ushijima acknowledges that. Canon Oikawa is very well a man of pride. He does whine, but he doesn't use emotional pity to get what he wants.
  • Iwaizumi: Iwaizumi is not just a brute who threatens Oikawa. His aggression is his way of saying "I care for you so don’t do anything stupid". Also, Iwaizumi may be more emotional than people make him out to be.
  • Kiyoko: Kiyoko is not just a pretty face. Kiyoko was an ex-athlete. She was the great heroine who brought Hinata’s bag on her two feet excuse yourself.
  • Yamaguchi: Yamaguchi is not just a weak little boy who doesn’t deserve to be on the Karasuno team. Yama tries the hardest. He finds someone who can teach him a jump float serve so he can prove to be a valuable player and not just a good ol’ bench-warmer.
  • Sugawara: Suga is not some weak-ass who depends on Daichi for everything. Stop drawing him as this overly-feminine character when his build is not that far off from Daichi’s. Suga will and can whoop anyone’s ass, do you not remember how painful his jabs can be?
  • Kuroo: Kuroo isn’t a sex god, he’s a dork who likes having fun, teasing his kouhais but knows when he goes over the top and apologizes. He loves science and is overall a huge little science nerd, currently attending college prep class as one of the top student’s in Nekoma.
  • Bokuto: Bokuto isn’t a fool who is self-centered and moody. Yes he acts like a dork, yes he is moody occasionally. But what matters most is that he has the capacity to pick himself and act like a proper Captain and Ace.

The Tsukishima-Yamaguchi Dynamic: A Secret Relationship

Yamaguchi hadn't meant to reveal it, but he accidentally lets it slip that he had been going out with Tsukishima in secret. It happened back in middle school, about a week before graduation. He hadn't wanted to separate with the blond, and actually worked up the courage to confess to him. As luck or fate would have it though, Tsukishima accepted his feelings and they had been together since. In retrospect, if he had been rejected by Tsukishima, Yamaguchi probably wouldn't have been attending Karasuno, or playing volleyball anymore.

The Secret: Reasons and Ramifications

Tsukishima doesn't want anyone to know about their relationship, and Yamaguchi doesn't want him getting mad at him for spilling, even if it was by accident. Yamaguchi also wanted to know why.

Valentine's Day Dilemmas and Admirers

Valentine's day is also coming soon, and it would be his first celebration with Tsukishima, if they were celebrating at all. But anyway, he wasn't sure if he should give him hand-made chocolates, or if just buying any gift would do. After all, they were both guys. And the traditional chocolate-giving for Valentine's was usually done by girls. Besides, he was sure as hell the blond would receive a lot of chocolates from his admirers already.

Doubts and Reassurance

Hinata asked: "Are you happy with Tsukishima?"Yamaguchi answered "Of course, I am. Why would you even ask?""It's just that, it's Tsukishima we're talking about, you know." "I like Tsukki a lot, Hinata. And I'm sure he likes me, at least as much. We've been together for a long time, since fifth grade. Granted, we weren't dating until after middle school, but that's still five years. And counting," Yamaguchi paused, heaving a deep breath. "I know Tsukki can be a little moody sometimes, but he can also be affectionate. Tsukki just doesn't like pda, that's it."

The Flowers and the Fallout

One week later, the day after Kageyama and Hinata's supposed monthsary, Hinata showed up to practice with a bouquet of wild flowers. "YAMAGUCHI!" He belted out, making sure every single person in the entire gym are paying attention. He huffed, and walked straight for Yamaguchi when he saw him, standing in the middle of the court. "Will you go out with me?"

Consequences of the Confession

Tsukishima was pissed. And when Tsukishima was pissed, nobody could talk to him. Well, nobody except for Yamaguchi.
