Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College: A Legacy of Technical Education in India

Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College (GNDEC), located in Ludhiana, Punjab, India, stands as a prestigious and one of the oldest engineering institutions in Northern India. Established in 1956, GNDEC has been a cornerstone of technical education, contributing significantly to India's engineering landscape. This article delves into the various facets of GNDEC, including its history, academic offerings, campus life, and its impact on the technical community.

Historical Overview

The foundation of GNDEC lies in the vision of the Nankana Sahib Education Trust (NSET), established in memory of the sacred temple of Nankana Sahib, the birthplace of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee, Amritsar, plays a crucial role in supporting NSET's mission of "Removal of Economic Backwardness through Technology". In line with this mission, NSET established a Polytechnic in 1953, followed by Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College (GNDEC) in 1956. The trust deed, registered on February 24, 1953, reflects a commitment to uplift the weaker sections of Indian society, with a focus on admitting 70% of students from rural areas. The foundation stone of the college was laid on April 8, 1956, by the first President of India, Dr. Rajendra Prasad.

Academic Affiliations and Accreditations

Initially affiliated with Panjab University, Chandigarh, GNDEC became affiliated with Punjab Technical University, Jalandhar (now I.K.Gujral Punjab Technical University, IKGPTU) in 1997. The college's courses are approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi.

GNDEC holds the distinction of being the first engineering college in Punjab to be granted Autonomous Status by the University Grants Commission (UGC), New Delhi, in 2012, under sections 2(f) and 12(B) of the UGC Act 1956. This autonomy allows the college to design its curriculum and conduct examinations, fostering academic excellence and innovation.

Furthermore, most of the undergraduate courses are accredited by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA). The college is also accredited with an "A" Grade by NAAC, UGC. Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has accredited the college multiple times for placement purposes, highlighting the quality of education and the employability of its graduates.
