GVSU Student Portal: Features and Benefits

The Grand Valley State University (GVSU) student portal is a comprehensive online platform designed to provide students with convenient access to essential academic resources, tools, and information. This article explores the various features and benefits of the GVSU student portal, highlighting its importance in supporting student success.

Accessing the GVSU Student Portal

Students can access the GVSU student portal through the university's website. To log in, students need their GVSU Network ID and password. Alumni are also able to log in using their GVSU Network ID and password or their G-number and Self-Service Password (Pin). It is important to note that login credentials (Network ID and Password) have been issued solely for individual use and are not to be shared with or delegated to others. The individual to whom they are assigned is responsible for all transactions made and information accessed with their use. Banner users must comply with all applicable Federal and State laws and University policies regarding confidentiality, security and privacy of data. Failure to adhere to these requirements may result in revocation of Banner access rights, University disciplinary action and/or civil or criminal legal action. Additional FERPA information is available via a provided link.

Banner Self-Service

Banner Self-Service is a key component of the GVSU student portal. It allows students to manage their academic records, register for courses, view grades, and access financial aid information. Banner maintenance is occasionally scheduled, such as the scheduled maintenance for Sunday, October 26th from 4am - 6am. Students should be aware of these maintenance schedules, which may temporarily restrict access to Banner Self-Service.

IT Support and Resources

GVSU IT provides extensive support and resources to students. Students can reach IT at (616) 331-2101 or (855) 435-7488 (toll-free). The IT support hours are Monday-Thursday: 7:30 am - Midnight and Friday: 7:30 am.

The Laker Tech team is available to help students with their tech-related questions and issues. GVSU IT aims to make using technology easier for students and offers various student resources.

Printing Services

GVSU provides students with $25 in free printing per semester. This service allows students to print papers and projects while on campus.

Campus Network Connectivity

Connecting to the campus network is simple. Laptops, tablets, and phones don’t need to be registered at all. For a wired connection, an active Ethernet port in the dorm room is required.

Tech Gear and Resources

The university offers a variety of tech gear and resources, including accessories, to support students during their time at GVSU.

Student Employment Opportunities

GVSU IT hires students for various positions. Students can find job postings through Workday. Some positions may offer the option of working remotely.

Security Measures

GVSU IT prioritizes the security of student online accounts and information. To enhance security, students are encouraged to use multi-factor authentication, such as Okta, which requires two or more verification methods (e.g., password and phone) to access devices, networks, or databases. GVSU IT is always looking for ways to keep students safe online.

OneDrive Integration

GVSU utilizes OneDrive for file storage and collaboration. Student drives will be moved to OneDrive. OneDrive is now set up for all devices, including Macs and Windows. OneDrive enables students to access their files from anywhere and collaborate online with ease.

Degree Audit

The degree audit tool within the student portal allows students to track their academic progress and ensure they are meeting degree requirements. The audit reflects adjustments made to a student’s registration/record. This includes degree requirements (e.g., major, minor, or emphasis). The degree audit helps students determine what courses are still left to take for their major/minor.

Understanding the Degree Audit

The legend of the degree audit includes a yellow circle with an exclamation point (!), which indicates a program section. The audit also shows how repeated courses are handled, reflecting repeats that have been processed in Banner, meaning the student did not fail the first attempt. The degree audit is not official.

Course Information

A small clipboard icon next to a course indicates that the course has a prerequisite. Students can view the catalog description of the course to understand the prerequisite requirements. The audit helps students determine the proper sequence for taking courses.

Important Considerations

The degree audit is a guide and is not an official transcript. It reflects withdrawals, repeated courses, etc. Data is refreshed nightly. If a degree requirement has not been met, students should contact the primary point of contact for follow-up. If there is a substitution issue within a specific block, students should consult with their advisor for assistance to resolve it.

Students should review their degree requirements to ensure they are on track for graduating. Any outstanding requirements will render them ineligible to graduate unless they are resolved.

Graduation

The audit is intended as a guide. Students should consult with their advisor to confirm all requirements are complete and the degree can be awarded. Students who complete requirements in the semester they are graduating should still consult with their advisor. The audit does not guarantee that a student has met all requirements as complete.
