Purdue University Northwest: A History of Growth and Transformation
Purdue University Northwest (PNW) stands as a testament to the evolution of higher education in Northwest Indiana. Formed in 2016 through the merger of Purdue University Calumet and Purdue University North Central, PNW carries forward a rich legacy dating back to the mid-20th century. This article delves into the history of PNW, exploring its origins, key developments, academic offerings, campus environments, and recent events.
Origins and Establishment
The roots of Purdue University Northwest can be traced to 1946 when Purdue University established regional campuses in Calumet and North Central Indiana. These campuses initially offered technical courses as part of a national defense training program during World War II, in collaboration with the federal government. Following the war's end in 1945, the campuses transitioned to offering for-credit college courses, laying the foundation for what would become Purdue University Calumet and Purdue University North Central.
In 2016, a significant milestone was reached when these two Purdue system universities merged to form Purdue University Northwest. This unification aimed to create a stronger, more comprehensive institution to serve the educational needs of the region.
Campus Environments
Purdue University Northwest operates with two campuses: the main campus in Hammond and a branch campus in Westville. Each campus offers unique facilities and contributes to the overall PNW experience.
Hammond Campus
The Hammond campus, PNW's main campus, spans 167 acres and is located approximately 25 miles from downtown Chicago. This residential campus comprises 17 academic and recreational buildings, creating a vibrant environment for students.
