Navigating Hampton University Admissions: Understanding GPA Requirements and More
Gaining admission to Hampton University requires a comprehensive understanding of its admission criteria. This article delves into the GPA requirements, acceptance rates, standardized test score policies, and other factors that influence your chances of being accepted into this esteemed institution.
Understanding the Academic Profile of Admitted Students
Hampton University's admissions are somewhat selective, with an acceptance rate of 62.24%. This means that while not extremely competitive, strong academic performance is crucial for gaining admission. The university seeks students destined to become future leaders in their chosen professions, whether in the arts, business, education, engineering, health, journalism, law, medicine or the sciences, students who believe in honesty, integrity, respect for self and others, take responsibility for their actions and are seeking opportunities to enhance the development of their character.
GPA Expectations
The average GPA at Hampton University is 3.1. This indicates that the university accepts below-average students; it's OK to be a B-average student, with some A's mixed in. However, the GPA ranges of most admitted students are as follows:
- 3.75+: 32%
- 3.50-3.74: 17%
- 3.25-3.49: 17%
- 3.00-3.24: 16%
- 2.50-2.99: 15%
- 2.00-2.49: 3%
- Below 2.00: 18.7%
If your GPA is at or below the school average of 3.1, you'll need a higher SAT score to compensate and show that you're prepared to take on college academics. If you're a junior or senior, your GPA is hard to change from this point on.
Standardized Testing Policies
Hampton University requires SAT/ACT scores, but there are exceptions. Students with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.6 (Unweighted) or rank in the top 10 percent of their class, have the option to choose whether or not to submit standardized test scores (SAT or ACT). Applicants choosing not to submit standardized test scores are strongly encouraged to submit at least one recommendation from a teacher in a core subject area. Home-schooled applicants, students attending schools outside the United States, and students wishing to be considered for merit-based scholarships must submit standardized test scores.

If you submit both the ACT and SAT, the University uses the most favorable score. Your SAT is based on a mix and match of your highest Evidence Based Reading/Writing and Math scores.
- SAT: The 25th percentile SAT score is 840, and the 75th percentile SAT score is 1220. In other words, a 840 places you below average, while a 1220 will move you up to above average.
- ACT: The average ACT score at Hampton University is 22. The 25th percentile ACT score is 15, and the 75th percentile ACT score is 22.
Scoring at a 1090 SAT or above will already give you a great shot at getting in. Scoring a 1220 SAT or a 22 ACT or above will nearly guarantee you admission.
Test-Optional Considerations
Hampton University has a test-optional admission policy for students with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.60 (Unweighted), or who rank in the top 10 percent of their class. Applicants choosing not to submit standardized test scores must submit at least one recommendation from a teacher or school counselor. Home-schooled applicants, students attending schools outside the United States, Students wishing to be considered for merit based scholarships must submit standardized test scores. If you submit both the ACT and SAT, the University uses the most favorable score. Your SAT is based on a mix and match of your highest Evidence Based Reading/Writing and Math scores.
