Hugh Harvey, a proud alumnus of the Colorado School of Mines, attributes his success to the exceptional education he received at the institution. Driven by a desire to give back, the Harveys established the Harvey Scholars Program in 2009 with an initial gift of $10 million. Recognizing the program's profound impact, they recently bolstered their commitment with an additional $11.2 million. This substantial contribution ensures the program's continued success for years to come.
"I couldn’t ask for a better education than I got at Mines," says Hugh Harvey. "And now I want to pay it forward. We want to help Mines attract the best, brightest, and hardest-working students, then encourage them to be thinking philanthropically from the moment they enroll." The Harveys' vision extends beyond financial assistance. They aspire to instill a sense of social responsibility in the scholars, encouraging them to become active contributors to society.
The Harveys have directed that the money be spent over a 25-year period. This careful planning ensures the longevity and sustainability of the program, allowing it to benefit future generations of Mines students.

Junior metallurgical and materials engineering major Scott Harper, a current Harvey Scholar, values the opportunities he has to connect with the Harveys. "The Harveys are a wonderful family," says Harper, "who enjoys the lunches he and the other scholars share with the Harveys several times a year." These interactions provide scholars with valuable mentorship and guidance, further enriching their experience.
This fall, the Harvey Scholars Program welcomes its fourth contingent of students, bringing the total to 26. This growing network of scholars will continue to shape the future of leadership at the Colorado School of Mines.
