Navigating the HBS Alumni Database: A Comprehensive Guide
The Harvard Business School (HBS) alumni network is a powerful resource for graduates. This article provides a comprehensive guide to the HBS alumni database, detailing its features, access protocols, and the various services available to alumni.
Accessing the Alumni Directory
Initial Login and Search Functionality
To access the HBS Alumni Directory, you will need your HarvardKey. If you haven't claimed your HarvardKey, ensure you choose the “alumni” tab when doing so. Upon your first login, you will be prompted to enter a search term in the search box located at the top of the screen. After entering the term and hitting enter, filtering options will appear in the lower left-hand corner of the screen. Location filters can be applied, although sometimes using the general search box for location yields better results. The search results will update immediately after each filter is added.
Advanced Search Techniques
The Alumni Directory allows for targeted searches using various criteria:
- Location: Search for alumni located in specific areas, such as Hawaii. Type the location into the location search box and click SEARCH.
- Job Title: Filter your search to find alumni in a specific position. For example, search for alumni who self-identify as a CEO located in New York City.
- Program and Class Year: Search by specific location, job title, or their program and class year.
Profile Views
Alumni can view a maximum of 200 unique profiles per day. Viewing an individual's profile details counts against this limit.
Maintaining Your Profile
Updating Personal Information
To update your address listing or other personal information, a special request must be made to the alumni records group. This applies to updating your undergraduate college information as well.

Privacy Settings
HBS is giving alumni more control over their contact information. Alumni, faculty, and students can view your profile via the Privacy tab of Edit My Profile for your Alumni Profile. You can choose to show or hide your home address or your business address. Your full address, city, and country will be displayed based on the settings you selected. The map will likewise reflect these settings.
Displaying Employment Information
Information about where an alumnus works or studies at an institution can remain in the alumni profile until edited.
Utilizing the Alumni Directory
Connecting with Fellow Alumni

Alumni Messaging Service
The directory features a messaging service to facilitate communication among alumni. To send a message, click on "send a message," which opens a window with a form for composing your message. Fellow alumni need to have someone to reply to.
