Some institutions may consider standardized test scores, although temporary test-optional policies may also be in place. As an example, students may Receive a 24 or below on the ACT English or a 33 or below on the SAT Reading section. The SAT Reading section is out of 40, and is not the same as the Evidence-Based Reading and Writing score, which is out of 800. In accordance with Barnard's temporary test-optional policy, students may elect not to submit standardized test scores to be eligible for HEOP.

Financial Criteria

Financial need is a primary consideration for HEOP eligibility. HEOP assists students who may have financial and academic hardship and would otherwise be unable to earn a college degree. Financial Aid determines whether HEOP applicants meet the New York State income guidelines for participation in the program. All HEOP applicants must submit the financial aid application materials by the required deadlines to be considered for the HEOP Scholars Program. All information submitted by the student and her family in support of her application for financial aid is treated with utmost confidentiality. All Barnard Aid is based on financial need. Depending on your needs and circumstances, we may offer financial assistance for tuition, books, transportation, and some personal expenses.

Residency

Typically, HEOP is exclusively available to residents of New York State. As an example, students must be residents of New York State in order to apply for the program.

The Application Process

The application process for HEOP involves several key steps:

Completing the College Application: Prospective students must first complete the standard application for admission to the college or university of their choice. Financial Aid Application: Applicants must submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the NYS Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) application. All University of Mount Saint Vincent HEOP students are required to attend a four-week summer program prior to the beginning of their freshman year. The summer program is designed to inform students about college life, initiate a program of academic skill building, and acquaint students with HEOP, its services, staff, and fellow classmates. Students must attend a six-week summer program before the start of their first year. This helps students get adjusted to the demands of college. Attending a five-week, full-time summer program before you begin your first year at New York Tech. This program focuses on strengthening reading, writing, math, and study skills.

Academic Support

HEOP provides comprehensive academic support to help students succeed in their coursework. If you need additional academic assistance to prepare for college work, HEOP can meet your needs. Before you begin your classes, the HEOP professional staff will evaluate your academic strengths and weaknesses, and design a specific academic program to help you succeed. The academic coursework in the HEOP program provides instruction in basic skills, reading, writing, vocabulary, mathematics, and other areas of study.

Tutoring Services

Tutoring is a cornerstone of HEOP's academic support. HEOP provides you with free tutorial services to assist with your academic courses. Tutorial services are conducted on a one-to-one basis or in groups, depending on your needs. HEOP students have access to a variety of tutoring services, including a writing specialist. With the Writing Specialist, students have the opportunity to work on essay drafting and revision, creative projects, and professional/academic application materials. The Writing Specialist also oversees the Tutoring Services Program and ensures that students have access to a tutor from any academic field they request.

HEOP counselors provide personalized guidance in selecting majors and courses. Academic Advising: HEOP counselors will assist you in selecting your academic major and courses. Advising: HEOP students receive tailored guidance and advising during their time at Fordham.
