To date, the HSF has awarded over $730 million in scholarships and provides great support services to ensure that as many exceptional students as possible can complete higher education and incentivize new generations of educated Latinos to thrive.
What is the Hispanic Scholarship Fund?
Established in 1975, the Hispanic Scholarship Fund aims to empower Hispanic students to pursue higher education and achieve their full potential. To achieve that goal, HSF provides financial assistance, mentorship, career development, and leadership training services. One of the most renowned initiatives of the organization is the HSF Scholar Program. The HSF Scholar Program offers financial aid and comprehensive support services to help students succeed academically and professionally. Every year, 10,000 students are selected to participate in the HSF Scholar Program. HSF Scholars are eligible for annual scholarships, ranging from $500 to $5,000 per scholarship. HSF awards more than $30 million in Scholarships annually and, depending upon available funds, HSF Scholars may also be eligible to receive a scholarship, which range from $500-$5,000 and awarded directly to students.
Who is Eligible for the HSF Scholarship?
So who’s eligible for an HSF scholarship? The way it works is straightforward. Once you successfully complete the application process and become part of the Hispanic Scholarship Fund family, you will have access to scholarships and financial help opportunities. To be eligible for the HSF Scholarship, applicants must:
- Be of Hispanic heritage
- Be a U.S. citizen, eligible non-citizen, or DACA recipient. Note that DACA students will need to submit an Employment Authorization Document (EAD).
- Minimum GPA requirements apply to both high school and college students: 3.0 for high school students and 2.5 for college students.
- Plan to enroll full-time in an accredited, not-for-profit, four-year university or graduate school. The HSF supports both undergraduate and graduate students who meet the eligibility criteria. This inclusivity ensures that students at various stages of their academic journey have the financial support they need to succeed. Graduate students pursuing advanced degrees can benefit from the same resources, networks, and support services that HSF offers to undergraduates. Graduate students can also apply for graduate school scholarships in addition to the HSF!
- All majors and graduate fields are accepted, with an emphasis placed on STEM majors.
How to Apply for the HSF Scholarship
How do you join the HSF, a Latinx scholars association? The process is simple, and you can see the percentage of completion as you add your information. The organization’s most well-known offerings are generous college scholarships, ranging from $500 to $5,000. To apply, you’ll need to visit the HSF website and create an account. You will then be prompted to fill out a profile that includes a range of information (e.g. residency status, contact info), education level, work history, and more.

Based on that information, the HSF applicant portal will generate a list of recommended scholarships for your specific qualifications and needs.
The portal will also use the information you share to determine your eligibility to become one of the 10,000 students selected for the HSF Scholar Program. If selected, you’ll need to complete an application requiring the following:
- Your high school or college transcript-An official document that provides your academic record and GPA.
- Your completed FAFSA-The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form determines your eligibility for federal financial aid.
- Your Student Aid Report (SAR)-A summary of the FAFSA that outlines your financial aid eligibility based on the information you provided.
- Financial aid award letter-A letter from your college or university detailing the financial aid package you have been offered, including grants, loans, and scholarships.
- A headshot-A recent photograph of yourself, typically used for identification purposes in the application process.
- College enrollment verification-Proof from your college or university showing you are currently enrolled in a degree program.
- A personal essay-A written statement that allows you to share your story, goals, and reasons for pursuing higher education and desire to be an HSF Scholar.
- A recommendation letter-A letter from a teacher, counselor, or employer supporting your application and highlighting your strengths. One piece of invaluable information is to ask for a letter of recommendation as soon as you can to keep up with the deadlines.

Bank of America offers 'The Academy, Customer Interactions' virtual workshop, where you can interact, learn, and network for banking career services opportunities.
- Leadership Development: Programs designed to cultivate leadership skills among HSF scholars. HSF also nominated me to apply to all-expenses-paid Summit events. I was invited to various events, such as the Healthcare Summit or the HSF Entrepreneurship Summit, where I could connect, get advice from professionals, and acquire key leadership skills for success in my career.
- Community Engagement: Scholars become part of a supportive network of alumni and professionals.
HSF Scholars have access to a full range of invaluable Scholar Support Services, including career services, mentorship, leadership development, knowledge building, and wellness training. Also, you become part of a nationwide network that you can access from the moment you become part of HSF. An excellent place to meet other Hispanic students and find valuable networking opportunities. HSF alumni are filled with as many exceptional students as any other scholar organization, but for me, I found that Hispanic Scholarship Fund alumni and members are some of the most approachable people, from the students to the President and CEO, Fidel Vargas. For example, the Hispanic Scholarship Fund holds a New York City event called HSF Leaders Uniting and Networking for Advancement (LUNA), where HSF Scholars, Alumni, and other professionals can network, build relationships, and resources to successfully complete and advance in their higher education. It's completely free and usually takes place at the New York Hilton in Midtown. Being part of HSF with as many exceptional students as it has is a significant accomplishment of hard work and dedication. The HSF family helps ensure each student's hard work pays off with many other career opportunities and development opportunities they offer.
