Hodges University: A Legacy of Education in Southwest Florida
Hodges University, formerly known as International College, served the Southwest Florida community for over three decades. Founded in Naples, Florida, in 1990, the institution focused on providing education and training opportunities, especially for adult learners. Although Hodges University officially closed, its impact on the lives of over 33,000 students remains a significant part of the region's history.
A History of Growth and Change
Hodges University began its journey as International College in 1990 with a modest enrollment of 85 students. Over the years, the institution grew and evolved, eventually changing its name to Hodges University in May 2007. This renaming honored Earl and Thelma Hodges, whose generous gift demonstrated their strong support for the university.
Throughout its history, Hodges University had several presidents who guided its direction. Charlene Wendel, a long-time faculty member, assumed the role of president on July 6, 2023, following the dismissal of John Meyer. Meyer, previously a dean at Florida Southwestern State College, had been appointed president on December 15, 2017. Other past presidents included Donald Wortham, a former vice president for strategic initiatives at the College of St. Scholastica.
Academic Programs and Accreditation
Hodges University offered a range of programs at the Associate, Bachelor's, and Master's levels, designed to prepare students for various careers. The university emphasized flexible class schedules and a variety of academic delivery methods, including both on-campus and distance education options. Many degree programs were available entirely online, catering to the needs of adult learners with busy schedules.
Several programs at Hodges University held specialized accreditations. Eight degree programs within the Johnson School of Business were accredited by the International Accreditation Council for Business Education (IACBE). The Master of Science in clinical mental health counseling degree program was accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). The Associate in Science in physical therapist assistant (PTA) program was accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE). The Dental Hygiene program was accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) and had been granted the accreditation status of initial accreditation.

The Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene: A Unique Program
One notable program at Hodges University was the Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene. This program was the first and only bachelor's degree in dental hygiene in Florida and offered an accelerated path to completion in under four years.
The curriculum included prerequisite classes, which could be completed 100% online or in a blended format. Students gained practical experience in Hodges' state-of-the-art Dental Hygiene Clinic, where they provided patient-centered care under the direction of dentists and dental hygienists. Clinical experiences included screening patients for oral disease, performing dental cleanings, taking digital x-rays, sterilizing equipment, and providing preventative care.
Admission to the Dental Hygiene Program required completion of prerequisite courses with a minimum GPA of 2.5. The secondary admissions process included an interview with faculty, a manual dexterity test, and an essay. Accepted students were conditionally admitted pending a Level II Criminal Background Check, physical examination, immunization record documentation, and drug screening.
Challenges and Closure
Despite its long history and contributions to the community, Hodges University faced significant challenges in recent years. Enrollment declined from 2,800 students in 2013 to only 410 students in 2023, leading to serious operating deficits. In August 2023, the university announced plans to close permanently by the end of August 2024, citing low enrollment, financial challenges, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, and Hurricane Ian. Hodges ceased accepting new degree-seeking students ahead of the fall 2023 semester, and the majority of classes and degree offerings ended in April 2024.

Hodges University provided resources to help students complete their degrees. Teach-Out plans were identified for each program to facilitate degree completion. Students needing transcripts can request them through Parchment.

Florida SouthWestern State College (FSW) also offered support to Hodges University students, providing a seamless transfer of credits and pathways to continue their education. FSW's health professions programs, with high job placement rates, presented a strong option for students seeking real-world readiness and employability.
A Fond Farewell
As Hodges University closed its doors, it extended its deepest gratitude to the community it served for over 30 years and to the 33,000 students who were a part of its legacy. The university thanked everyone for their support and for being a part of its journey.
