Hofstra University: A Comprehensive Overview

Hofstra University, founded in 1935, stands as a private institution committed to fostering a community of innovators, creators, and leaders. Hofstra also offers innovative programs that meet the needs of a diverse student body, including the Rabinowitz Honors College, Legal Education Accelerated Program (LEAP), Hofstra 4+4 Program (a highly selective BA-BS/MD program), Physician Assistant Studies Program (a highly selective BS/MS program), and First-Year Connections.

Hofstra's 244-acre campus is a nationally registered arboretum with 75 outdoor sculptures that blooms with thousands of tulips every spring. Beyond academics, Hofstra offers a vibrant campus life with a wide array of extracurricular activities. Hofstra is home to 26 local/national fraternities and sororities, and more than 220 academic, media, multicultural, performance, pre-professional, religious, social/political, and sports clubs and organizations. Hofstra also offers 21 intercollegiate athletic programs competing at the NCAA Division I level.

The Student Government Association (SGA) is Hofstra's student-run governing body. Composed of full-time undergraduate students, the SGA is a liaison between students and the University's faculty, administration, and Board of Trustees. The SGA plans and executes multiple programs and initiatives throughout the academic year and oversees the finances of over 180 clubs and organizations.

Students here take the initiative with student-led events and activities, such as the weekly Hofstra Concerts Coffeehouse, where student bands perform, and the HEAT Network, a TV network that runs student-produced shows. Students are also very involved in clubs and one of the most popular is Danceworks, which puts on dance shows that are choreographed and performed by students. As one student shares, “the student body goes out of their way to host and organize events,” and this wide range of events “allows for inclusivity on our campus.” Students also support each other’s work, with one student giving an example: “The end-of-year film festival is a great way to see people’s work across the school.”

Admissions and Financial Aid

Hofstra University seeks to enroll students from diverse backgrounds and geographic locations, with varied interests. Applications are accepted for fall and spring admission. The Admission Committee reviews each application individually to assess academic achievement, curricular rigor, leadership potential, depth of extracurricular activities, standardized test scores, and overall interest in attending Hofstra. The application process provides an opportunity for the prospective student to share information that may not be apparent on a transcript or through a test score.

Hofstra University works to make a private college education affordable for students and their families. In fact, 97% of full-time first-year students in the fall of 2023 were awarded financial aid, including grants. Student Financial Services will assist you in exploring your options, including interest-free payments and a money-saving four-year locked-in rate for tuition and fees to help manage costs.

Career Development and Alumni Network

Hofstra University’s Center for Career Design and Development offers comprehensive, personalized support to help students explore different academic and career paths. The center assists with job searches, graduate school applications, networking skills, and crafting impactful résumés and cover letters. Students can access services during the center’s drop-in hours or by scheduling a one-on-one appointment.

Students appreciate the “supportive career center,” with one saying, “I am so glad I did not take this for granted and it has helped me so much in building my résumé and landing internships.” The Career Innovation Lab, available Monday through Thursday during open hours, provides cutting-edge tools, including AI and VR platforms, to help students prepare for interviews, design résumés, and receive additional career support.   • Hof USA: A multi-functional entertainment center located in the center of residential and student life on campus. The complex includes a game area, casual dining, a diner style eatery, a large performance and dance area, and a 24-hour convenience store with grab and go sandwiches and salads, grocery, and sundries.
  • David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex: The 5,023-seat David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex hosts Hofstra's athletics and other regional and community events.
  • The Hofstra University Museum of Art: The Hofstra University Museum of Art is nationally accredited and houses a permanent collection of more than 5,000 works of art. The museum, with a collection of more than 5,200 works of art from the world’s diverse cultures, offers four original exhibitions annually along with related programs that engage varied audiences. It also oversees an extensive collection of outdoor sculptures featuring 75 works of art.

Hofstra extends learning beyond the classroom through internship programs, a Co-op program, and study abroad opportunities. The Co-op program at the Fred DeMatteis School of Engineering and Applied Science offers students paid work experience in a field related to their major.
