Horace Mann School Tuition: A Comprehensive Overview

Horace Mann School, an American private, independent college-preparatory school in the Bronx, is a member of the Ivy Preparatory School League, educating students from the New York metropolitan area from nursery school to the twelfth grade. Understanding the tuition costs associated with such a prestigious institution is essential for families considering enrollment. This article provides a detailed overview of Horace Mann School's tuition, associated fees, and financial aid opportunities.

Horace Mann School: An Overview

Founded in 1887, Horace Mann School has a rich history of providing a rigorous academic environment. It was established by Nicholas Murray Butler as a co-educational experimental and developmental unit of Teachers College at Columbia University. The school is located in the Fieldston neighborhood of Bronx, NY. Horace Mann aims to prepare a diverse community of students to lead great and giving lives and strives to maintain a safe, secure, and caring environment in which mutual respect, mature behavior, and the life of the mind can thrive.

The school comprises four divisions: a Nursery Division (three-year-olds through kindergarten) located on 90th Street in Manhattan, a Lower Division (kindergarten through fifth grades) on the Horace Mann campus on Tibbett Avenue in Riverdale, a Middle Division (sixth through eighth grades) on the 246th Street campus in Riverdale, and an Upper Division (ninth through twelfth grades) also on the 246th Street campus. There is also the John Dorr Nature Laboratory, located on 275 acres (111 ha) of land in Washington Depot, Connecticut, used for extended field trips for classes of students starting in second grade and an orientation program for new students entering the Middle or Upper Divisions.

Current Tuition Costs

As of the current academic year, the tuition for students in the Lower Division through the Upper Division is $64,070. The tuition for the 2025-2026 academic year is $65,370. Eighty-five percent of the tuition dollars pay for faculty salaries and benefits. Horace Mann has an unusually large faculty for an independent day school. This enables us to offer the wide variety of courses at the upper levels, and to provide specialized services at all Divisions.

It's important to note that the tuition charge does not include several additional fees. These include an Enrollment Fee of $100, Parent Association Dues of $85, an Activity Fee of $125, a Facility Improvement fee of $950 for Nursery and Lower Division students and $1,150 for Middle and Upper Division Students, and Middle Division Students Book Fee of $325.

Additional Costs

Additional costs vary from division to division. At the Nursery and Lower Division most other costs are included. In the Middle and Upper Division, lunch and books are not included in the tuition figure. Parent(s)/guardian(s) should also take time to look at the technology requirements for students at HM as computers are not included in the tuition. Transportation costs are additional for all students. When students take a trip during the school day, the costs are included. If students participate in special trips, for example, the Glee Club summer trips, or travels during the spring break with world language classes or clubs, those costs are additional. Some athletic equipment and supplies are included; team coaches can provide specific information.

Tuition Billing Options

Horace Mann offers three tuition billing options to parents:

  1. Annual Billing Option: A single tuition charge for the complete amount, due in its entirety on August 15.
  2. Semi-Annual Billing Option: The tuition cost is split into two charges, with the first payment due August 15 and the second payment on January 15.
  3. Ten-Month Installment Plan: Tuition and fees are charged monthly over a ten-month period (July-April), with payments due on the 15th of the following month (August-May). This is the default option if no other is requested.

A 1% finance charge will be assessed to any unpaid balances. Horace Mann reserves the right to discontinue enrollment if accounts do not have a zero balance at the beginning of the Fall (August) and Spring (January). Failure to make regular payments could result in your account being turned over to an outside collection agency.

Financial Aid

Horace Mann has a strong commitment to providing Financial Aid to students who could not otherwise attend. All Financial Aid is based on need; no merit scholarships are awarded. Admission to Horace Mann is need-blind. Applicants are evaluated without regard to a request for Aid.

Tuition Increases

Each year, the Horace Mann School Board of Trustees meets and sets the tuition figures for the following year. They make this decision based on estimated costs and expenses. In recent years, the annual tuition increase has been between 4% and 6%. For example, in 2024-25, the tuition for grades K-12 was $64,070. Families who receive Financial Aid often receive additional funding to help cover this increase. "The trustees and administration work hard to minimize any tuition increase while striving to maintain the overall quality and integrity of the programs we offer,” says Dr.

The Annual Fund

The tuition costs do not cover the entire expense of educating students at HM. The Annual Fund is the school’s yearly campaign to raise funds in support of the daily operations budget. Contributions from trustees, parents, alumni, parents of alumni, grandparents, members of the faculty and staff, and other friends of the school help to close the gap that exists between tuition and the actual cost of a Horace Mann education. Each year we set a goal for the Annual Fund of 100% parent participation. While leadership gifts are important for the school’s economic strength, every gift does matter and every gift does make a difference. Strong financial support of the Annual Fund demonstrates the donor’s understanding and commitment to the school.

Academic Excellence and Extracurricular Activities

Horace Mann School distinguishes itself through a commitment to academic rigor and a wide array of extracurricular activities. The school maintains excellent student-teacher ratios, far exceeding the national average of 17:1. This allows for personalized attention and fosters a supportive learning environment.

Horace Mann features 60+ clubs, with a strong emphasis on writing, resulting in over 15 student publications, including the award-winning weekly newspaper, The Record. Our athletic teams provide both a physical education option and extracurricular involvement, with over 40 junior varsity and varsity teams spanning 25 sports.

College Counseling

At the Horace Mann School, the College Counseling Process begins in 10th grade with information sessions and a College Planning evening. Horace Mann typically maintains larger senior class sizes, with approximately 180 students, resulting in a greater number of successful admissions to top universities.
