GPA Requirements for Graduation: A Comprehensive Guide
Earning a high school diploma or a university degree is a significant milestone. This article provides a detailed overview of the GPA and other academic requirements for graduation, drawing upon examples and regulations from various states and institutions.
General Graduation Requirements
Generally, students must fulfill specific academic standards and credit requirements to graduate. This involves completing a prescribed course of study that imparts the knowledge and skills necessary for success in postsecondary education, skilled work, and civic life.
Minnesota's Approach
In Minnesota, students are required to complete two kinds of requirements by the time they graduate. Students must:
- Satisfactorily complete all state academic standards or local academic standards where state standards do not apply.
- Satisfactorily complete the state credit requirements under Minnesota Statutes 2025, section 120B.024.
To graduate, a student's high school coursework in Minnesota must include at least the minimum state credit requirements. A credit is equivalent to a student successfully completing an academic year of study or mastering the subject matter, as determined by the local school district. Students must complete a minimum of 21.5 course credits as follows:
- 4 credits of language arts, sufficient to satisfy all of the academic standards in English language arts
- 3 credits of mathematics, encompassing Algebra II, Integrated Mathematics III, or an equivalent in high school as defined by the high school math standards. Grade 8 students must complete Algebra as defined by the Minnesota Math Standards.
- 3 credits of science, including one credit to satisfy all the earth and space science standards for grades 9 through 12, one credit to satisfy all the life science standards for grades 9 through 12, and one credit to satisfy all the chemistry or physics standards for grades 9 through 12.
- 3½ credits of social studies, including credit for a course in government and citizenship in either grade 11 or 12 for students beginning grade 9 in the 2024-2025 school year and later or an advanced placement, international baccalaureate, or other rigorous course on government and citizenship, and a combination of other credits encompassing at least United States history, geography, government and citizenship, world history, and economics sufficient to satisfy all of the academic standards in social studies.
- 1 credit in the arts
- Physical Education, credit is determined at the local level. Credits sufficient to satisfy the state standards in physical education;
- Health Education, credit is determined at the local level. Must meet locally developed standard requirements.
- 7 elective credits
Students who begin grade 9 in the 2024-25 school year and later must successfully complete a course for credit in personal finance in grade 10, 11, or 12. A teacher of a personal finance course that satisfies the graduation requirement must have a field license or out-of-field permission in agricultural education, business, family and consumer science, social studies, or math.

Credit Equivalencies in Minnesota
Minnesota provides for certain credit equivalencies to allow flexibility in meeting graduation requirements:
- A one-half credit of economics taught in a school's agriculture, food, and natural resources education or business education program or department may fulfill a one-half credit in social studies if the credit is sufficient to satisfy all of the academic standards in economics.
- An agriculture science or career and technical education credit may fulfill the elective science credit if the credit meets the state physical science, life science, earth and space science, chemistry, or physics academic standards or a combination of these academic standards as approved by the district.
- An agriculture or career and technical education credit may fulfill the credit in chemistry or physics if the credit meets the state chemistry or physics academic standards as approved by the district. A student must satisfy either all of the chemistry academic standards or all of the physics academic standards prior to graduation. An agriculture science or career and technical education credit may not fulfill the required biology credit.
- A career and technical education credit may fulfill a mathematics or arts credit requirement.
- A computer science credit may fulfill a mathematics credit requirement if the credit meets state academic standards in mathematics.
- A Project Lead the Way credit may fulfill a science or mathematics credit requirement if the credit meets the state academic standards in science or mathematics.
- An ethnic studies course may fulfill a social studies, language arts, arts, math, or science credit if the course meets the applicable state academic standards. An ethnic studies course may fulfill an elective credit if the course meets applicable local standards or other requirements.
Early Graduation in Minnesota
Minnesota Statutes 2025, Section 120B.07 states that any secondary school student who has completed all required courses or standards may, with the approval of the student, the student's parent or guardian, and local school officials, graduate before the completion of the school year.
Rigorous Course of Study in Minnesota
The rigorous course of study waiver allows high school students to replace a required course with a more rigorous one. This adheres to the statutory requirement for comprehensive education in all academic content standards while providing reasonable flexibility. Student qualification for a rigorous course waiver is determined by local school boards.
Requirements in Hawaiʻi
In Hawaiʻi, public schools prepare students for college, careers, and community engagement through rigorous academic standards and diverse learning opportunities. The purpose of high school graduation requirements is to establish rigorous standards of learning that will enable all public school students to meet the vision of a Hawai‘ʻi public school graduate. These include:
- Two credits in a single World Language.
- Two credits in a Fine Arts discipline: Visual Arts, Music, Drama or Dance.
- CTE: Two credits need to be in a single career pathway program of study sequence.
- 4 credits of math: The four credits must include one credit for Algebra 2 and one credit beyond Algebra 2.
Washington State Requirements
In Washington State, successful completion of Washington State History/Government is a high school graduation requirement. Washington State History/Government instruction occurs in the 7th and 8th grade in the Bellevue School District. Students who transfer into the Bellevue School District after 7th grade will be required to satisfactorily complete Washington State History/Government curriculum in order to meet the graduation requirement.

GPA as a Graduation Requirement
Many institutions require a minimum cumulative GPA for graduation.
Hawaiʻi's GPA Requirement
Students must earn a minimum cumulative 2.0 grade point average (GPA) in order to receive a diploma.
University GPA Requirements
Undergraduate students must meet a minimum university cumulative GPA requirement and a minimum Program GPA requirement to qualify for graduation. The university’s undergraduate cumulative grade point average, or university’s undergraduate grade point average (UGPA), is determined by dividing the total number of quality points earned by the total number of semester hours attempted with earned grades. The UGPA takes into account all undergraduate course work taken at the university, except that courses numbered below the 100 level will not be used in the earned hours or UGPA calculations.
The Program GPA is determined by calculating the grades from all 200+ level courses taken within the course index of the degree program (e.g. all 200+ level CHEM courses are used to calculate the Program GPA for BA/BS in Chemistry students). For cases in which a program has fewer than 30 credit hours of 200+ level courses within the program index (e.g. interdisciplinary degrees, general studies degree, individualized studies degree), the Program GPA will be calculated using the grades from all 300+ level courses taken. Students who entered the university before summer 2025 will have their Program GPA calculated using the method outlined above.
A candidate for the Bachelor of Science in Nursing in the RN-BSN program must have satisfactory completion of the required BSN courses and earned a minimum university and program grade point average of 2.0.

Additional Degree and Certificate Requirements
To be awarded a second bachelor’s degree type, students must earn a minimum of thirty additional semester hours in the program. The undergraduate certificate is a credential offered by the university below the baccalaureate degree. It is awarded to students who have completed the requirements of the selected certificate program. The following university-wide requirements apply to all undergraduate certificates. Complete the minimum credit hours applicable to the certificate program as specified in this catalog with no more than 30% of the total required credit hours being shared with another certificate program.
Students who want to take a minor must apply for admission to the minor program after acceptance into a major program. The course work requirements for a minor are prescribed by a department or unit and consist of at least 18 semester hours.
Each student must earn a minimum of 121 semester hours of credit (unless a higher minimum is specified in a program of study). At least 50 of the total semester hours, whether required or elective, must be earned in courses numbered 300 or higher. Completion of a baccalaureate degree also requires students to submit work to the department of the major for the department’s learning outcomes measurement.
The course work requirements for a minor consist of 18-23 semester hours. Students may elect a major and a minor in the same department only if there is more than one degree program in that department and if the major and minor are in two different programs of the department. Students are cautioned that completion of the major, which is required for all degrees, and completion of the minor, which is optional, may require the student to complete more than the 121 semester hours minimum required for a baccalaureate degree. At least 48 of the total semester hours, whether required or elective, must be earned in courses numbered 300 or higher.
Diploma Designations
Students may earn one or more designations on their standard high school diploma-the scholar designation and the merit designation.
Florida's Standard Diploma Options
Florida students entering grade nine may choose from one of five options to earn a standard diploma. In addition to the five options available for students to earn a standard diploma listed above, Rule 6A-1.09963, Florida Administrative Code (F.A.C.), High School Graduation Requirements for Students with Disabilities, outlines two additional options that students with disabilities may complete.
The Scholar Diploma Designation aligns closely to the State University System's requirements for admission into a Florida university.
Students who choose the ACCEL 18 credit graduation program can participate in the National Merit Scholarship Program if they take the PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMSQT) in either the next-to-last year or the last year they are enrolled in high school.
Students who choose the ACCEL program and complete the requirements within three years can choose to graduate in three years. Students who choose this option are not required to graduate early and may elect to stay in school for a fourth year. However, once a student chooses to graduate and earns a diploma, they cannot remain in school for an additional year. High school credits awarded before grade nine shall be counted toward the required credits for all graduation.
Students who plan to apply to an out-of-state or private in-state college or university and who are interested in the three-year graduation program should contact those institutions as early as possible for specific admission requirements.
Students who choose the ACCEL 18 credit graduation program must be treated equally in all ways with students who choose the 24-credit program, including eligibility for valedictorian or salutatorian ranking, Talented 20, and Bright Futures Scholarships.
A high school student who pursues the four-year 24-credit or 18 credit ACCEL high school graduation program may have the option to participate in early graduation (graduating in less than 8 semesters). A student who graduates early may continue to participate in school activities and social events and attend and participate in graduation events with the student’s cohort, as if the student were still enrolled in high school. A student who graduates early will be included in class ranking, honors, and award determinations for the student’s cohort.
Personalized Pathway Requirement (PPR)
Personalized Pathway Requirement (PPR) are related courses that lead to a specific post high school career or educational outcome chosen by the student based on the student’s interests and High School and Beyond Plan, that may include Career and Technical Education and are intended to provide a focus for the student’s learning.
