Navigating the Academic Year: Understanding the Semester Structure at CU Boulder
The University of Colorado Boulder (CU Boulder) operates on a structured academic calendar. Understanding the nuances of this calendar, including semester lengths, session variations, and key dates, is crucial for students, faculty, and staff alike. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the CU Boulder academic calendar, including standard semesters and special sessions.
Standard Semesters: Fall and Spring
CU Boulder's academic year is primarily divided into two standard semesters: Fall and Spring. Each of these semesters spans approximately 15 weeks, providing a consistent framework for the majority of courses offered.
Summer Term: A Variety of Sessions
Beyond the traditional Fall and Spring semesters, CU Boulder offers an extensive Summer Term, designed to provide flexibility and accelerated learning opportunities. The Summer Term comprises several sessions of varying lengths:
- Maymester and Augmester: These are two intensive three-week sessions, allowing students to focus on a single course and earn credits quickly.
- Five-Week Sessions: Two five-week sessions provide a more condensed format compared to the regular semesters.
- Eight-Week Session: An eight-week session offers a middle ground between the five-week and the full-length semesters.
- Ten-Week Session: The ten-week session provides a more comprehensive summer learning experience.
Special Sessions: Focused Learning
In addition to the standard semesters and summer term, CU Boulder offers courses during special sessions that run for five or seven weeks and are offered in between fall and spring semesters (considered part of spring semester). These sessions allow for concentrated study in specific areas.
Key Academic Dates and Holidays
The academic calendar is punctuated by important dates that mark the rhythm of the university year.

Final Examinations: Policy and Procedures
Final examinations are an integral part of the instructional program at CU Boulder. The university adheres to a published final examination schedule each semester.
- Undergraduate Courses: Unless otherwise notified, students should assume that an examination will be given.
- Graduate Courses: Students should consult with their instructors.
- Scheduling: Final examinations should be given as scheduled by the Office of the Registrar.
- Exceptions: An instructor may allow individual students to take the final examination at an earlier or later time with good reason.

- Rescheduling or Cancellation: The Provost may reschedule or cancel final examinations in response to inclement weather or other emergencies.
Academic Calendar Revisions
CU Boulder has implemented revisions to the academic calendar to improve student academic preparedness and promote health and wellbeing. These revisions include:
- Adjusting the Monday-Wednesday-Friday and Tuesday-Thursday class meeting patterns so they both have the same number of instructional days.
- Moving the first day of classes each semester earlier to Thursday rather than the following Monday.
- Creating a midsemester reading day each semester.
- Adding another reading day before the final exam period at the end of each semester.
- Moving spring break one week earlier to facilitate alignment with Boulder Valley School District’s and St.
Religious Observances
The University of Colorado Boulder has a legal and moral obligation to accommodate all students who must be absent from classes or miss scheduled exams in order to observe religious holidays. The university ensures that these students are not penalized for exercising their rights to religious observance.
Contact Hours
One base contact hour equals a minimum of 700 minutes. The final examination period may be included in contact hours for summer courses and in courses offered during special (variable length) sessions in fall and spring semesters.
Impact of Calendar Changes
The revised calendar shortens the calendrical ground covered by the semester by one day. Three days of instruction are removed, and one midsemester reading day and one final exams reading day are added. Put another way: Currently, the semester ends 16 weeks and 2 days after it begins. Beginning Fall 2025, the semester will end 16 weeks and 1 day after it begins.

Midsemester Reading Day Guidelines
Class sessions or graded assignments of any kind, including papers, lab practicums, presentations, portfolios and projects, may not take place or be due on a day designated in the academic calendar as a reading day. However, unlike the final exam period reading days, the midsemester reading day is not a “blackout date” for concerts, sports events or other campus events.
