Finding GPA Information

Once you are logged into ParentVUE, here are the steps to find your child's GPA:

  1. Course History: In many school districts, such as FCPS (Fairfax County Public Schools), GPA information can be found under "Course History" in SIS (Student Information System), which is often accessed through ParentVUE.
  2. Report Card: Check under the "Report Card" tab to see report card grades for any given marking period.
  3. Naviance: Note: For college applications, students must request an official senior transcript in Naviance during the fall. Senior transcripts must include work in progress initiated after the first day of school, senior GPA, percentile, and academic course history, including summer grades. PWCS senior transcripts will be available by mid-September.

Understanding GPA in Naviance

Naviance is a platform used by secondary students for academic and career planning, college and career exploration, transcript requests for colleges/universities and scholarship organizations, and post-high school planning.

  • Transcript Requests: Follow your high school's specific process for placing transcript requests through Naviance.
  • Senior Transcripts: Note that for college applications, official senior transcripts are requested in Naviance, typically in the fall. These transcripts include work in progress, senior GPA, percentile, and academic course history, including summer grades.

Additional Features and Information on ParentVUE

ParentVUE offers a variety of features beyond just displaying GPA. Here’s a look at some of the other information you can access:

Grades and Assignments

When a teacher enters a grade or assignment into the system, parents have immediate access to the information. However, the frequency of updates can vary from course to course, so it’s important to understand teacher expectations.

  • Grade Book and Daily Assignments: Grades and daily assignments can be found under two separate tabs in "Grade Book" and "Daily Assignments.”
  • Interim and Marking Period Tabs: For year-long classes, information can be found under the “Interim 1” and “Marking Period 1” tabs. Semester course grades and assignments can be found by scrolling through the tabs to “SB Interim 1” and “SB Marking Period 1”.

Attendance

Family members can report their child’s upcoming absence through ParentVUE without needing to call the school or write a note. Absences can be entered on the day of the absence or up to 30 days in advance. A window will appear asking for information regarding the absence. The absence will be routed to your child’s school for review.

Calendar and Class Schedule

  • Calendar: The calendar shows assignments due for a particular day and events listed on the school calendar. The calendar can change views from a daily calendar to a monthly calendar. When you’re in the daily calendar view, you can navigate through days of the week by using the arrows next to the day’s date.
  • Class Schedule: The class schedule lists the courses the student is enrolled in and the period/time of day they attend the class.

Other Available Information

  • Fees: Lists fees incurred by the student.
  • Health: Lists health conditions of the student and immunization data.
  • Student Info: This includes demographic data such as emergency contacts, physician and dental contact, student locker, and transportation data.

Understanding the Difference Between Canvas and VUE

It's crucial to differentiate between Canvas and VUE to effectively use both platforms:

  • Canvas: This is a learning management system used to manage, deliver, and produce instructional content. It is where you'll find lessons and assignments.
  • VUE: This is a student information system that functions as a repository for student records and data. It is where you’ll see course announcements and information and where you will go for communication.

Addressing Common Issues

Incorrect Information

One of the benefits of ParentVUE is that families can update their contact information as needed. The information will be confirmed by the school and then updated in school databases.

Forgotten Password

If you forgot your password, look under the username and password field for “Forgot your password?” If you attempt to log in more than three times with incorrect information, your account will be disabled for security reasons. Contact your student’s school to re-enable your account.

Technical Assistance

For assistance with course content, lessons, assignments, etc., please contact your student’s teacher.

GPA Calculation and College Applications

Weighted vs. Unweighted GPA

It’s important to understand the difference between weighted and unweighted GPAs, especially when it comes to college applications. Weighted GPAs give more weight to advanced courses like AP and IB, while unweighted GPAs treat all courses equally.

GPA Trends

Students' GPAs often increase over the years. Comparing a GPA at the end of sophomore year to the end of senior year requires understanding the student's academic trajectory. Students taking more challenging courses in their junior and senior years may see a more significant increase in their GPA.

Transcripts for College Applications

  • Timing: Mid-year transcripts for seniors are typically sent in mid-February. These transcripts include semester one senior grades and preliminary GPA calculations.
  • Counselor Support: School counselors complete documents for each institution per student request through Naviance, including a mid-year report to accompany each transcript.
