A common question among users revolves around the possibility of direct Bluetooth connectivity with the UA Console, the software interface for UA's Apollo interfaces, and how Bluetooth integrates with UAFX pedals. This article delves into the nuances of Bluetooth functionality within the UA ecosystem, particularly focusing on UAFX pedals and exploring potential workarounds for direct console connectivity.

Understanding UAFX Pedals and Bluetooth

The UAFX line of pedals from Universal Audio is designed to bring the sound of classic studio gear and amplifiers to your pedalboard. These pedals offer high-quality emulations of vintage effects and amps, and many include features for deep customization via the UAFX Control mobile app.

UAFX Control Mobile App

The UAFX Control mobile app is a companion application for UAFX pedals, available for both iOS and Android devices. It facilitates a range of functions, including:

  • Bonus Content: Accessing free bonus effects, speaker cabinets, and custom voicings for your UAFX pedals.
  • Global Settings: Configuring global settings such as footswitch modes and EQ settings.
  • Preset Management: Managing presets on supported pedals, including saving, loading, and editing.
  • MIDI Control: Assigning MIDI Program Changes on pedals with presets and configuring MIDI CCs for external control.
  • Firmware Updates: Ensuring your pedal has the latest features and improvements.

To fully utilize these features, you may need to update your pedal's firmware to the latest version using the UA Connect app. To use USB MIDI and control features, you must update to firmware version 2.0 or later.

Bluetooth Connectivity with UAFX Pedals

The UAFX Control app connects to UAFX pedals via Bluetooth, offering a wireless method for controlling and configuring your pedal.

  • Pairing: Each pedal must be paired individually with your mobile device via Bluetooth.
  • Multiple Connections: While you can maintain Bluetooth connections to multiple pedals simultaneously, you can only view settings for one pedal at a time. Switching between pedals involves a short pause.
  • Bluetooth Mode: Within the UAFX Control app, you must select "Bluetooth mode" to connect wirelessly. Any unpaired UAFX pedals in range will appear, allowing you to select and configure them.

USB Connectivity with UAFX Pedals

In addition to Bluetooth, UAFX Control can also be used with your UAFX pedals in USB mode. USB mode requires a direct USB connection between the UAFX pedal and your mobile device.

  • Direct Connection: UAFX Control supports a single direct USB connection.
  • USB Mode: You must select "USB mode" within the UAFX Control app.
  • Data Cable: Use a USB-C data cable to connect the pedal to your device.

Initial Setup and Registration

When you first open UAFX Control, iOS prompts you to allow Bluetooth. You must tap OK and allow Bluetooth to use UAFX Control. If you don’t, UAFX Control cannot connect to your UAFX pedals. To manually allow the app to use Bluetooth (if you choose Don’t Allow when prompted), open the Settings app, choose UAFX Control from the list, and enable Bluetooth. Android also requires you to allow the device's location for Bluetooth to function correctly. If your pedal is not registered to your UA account, you can register it with UAFX Control.

Any time the pedal is registered, any bonus effect(s), voicings, or speaker cabinets are added to your pedal, if applicable. If the pedal is subsequently registered by a different user, registration is transferred automatically.

Managing Presets and Settings

The UAFX Control app provides comprehensive tools for managing presets and pedal settings.

  • Preset Management: The app allows you to view, audition, and manage presets on your UAFX pedal. Presets you select in the app can be recalled from several footswitch settings or via MIDI.
  • Factory and Artist Presets: The first time you connect your pedal to UAFX Control, the app installs UA factory and artist presets onto the pedal.
  • Preset Descriptions: To see a description of each factory or artist preset and any custom settings within the UAFX Control app, tap ••• to view preset info. You can edit a custom factory or artist preset and save it as your own preset by holding down the pedal’s Store switch to make use of these custom settings.
  • Editing Presets: After you load a preset, you can edit it by changing the knob and switch settings. When a preset has been changed, the EDITED label appears next to the name in the preset list.
  • Saving Presets: You can save the preset from the pedal by holding down the pedal’s Store switch until the Preset LED blinks rapidly.
  • Pedal Settings: Tap Settings at the bottom right of the screen to access the settings for a pedal. You may need to scroll down on this screen to see all available settings.

Additional UAFX Control Functions

The UAFX Control app also provides a range of additional functions.

  • Backing up Presets/Rigs: Presets/Rigs Backup retrieves all user presets from the UAFX pedal and saves them as a single batch in the UAFX Control app.
  • Restoring Presets/Rigs: All presets or Rigs in the UAFX Control backup are added to the presets or Rigs on the pedal.
  • Removing a Pedal: You can remove a pedal from the tile display in the UAFX Control app.
  • Getting Help: You can get contextual help in UAFX Control by tapping the ⓘ symbol next to a section. To access the UAFX pedal manuals and get other details such as individual effect control maps, tap the Online Help button at the bottom of the screen to visit the UAFX Knowledge Base.

Live/Preset Switch

You can choose to listen to the preset sound or the live sound with the app, instead of using the pedal’s footswitches. After you use the app to change to a footswitch mode that requires the pedal sound to be always on, you can choose whether the Live sound or a Preset sound is active.

Assigning the preset or live soundAt the bottom of the app, tap the Live/Preset buttons to switch between the live and preset sounds. Your choice will persist on the pedal until you switch to another sound, either with a footswitch on the pedal or with this switch in the app.

4-Cable Mode

4-cable mode with UAFX amp pedals lets you add another switchable channel to any real guitar amplifier that has an effects loop. This special mode lets you switch between your guitar amplifier’s built-in preamp section and the sounds in your pedal.

UA Connect: Desktop Companion for UAFX Pedals

While UAFX Control is primarily for mobile devices, Universal Audio also offers UA Connect, a desktop application for managing UAFX pedals.

Key Features of UA Connect

  • Registration: Register your UAFX pedal to unlock bonus content.
  • Firmware Updates: Keep your pedal up-to-date with the latest firmware.
  • Bonus Content: Access bonus effects, speaker cabinets, and custom voicings.

Connecting and Registering

To use UA Connect, connect your UAFX pedal to your computer via USB-C. The USB-C port can be connected to any type of USB port on your computer, but you may need an adapter. Only connect one UAFX pedal to your computer and UA Connect at a time. Click the UAFX Pedals tab on the left side of the UA Connect screen. Note: You should disconnect the USB-C port from your computer before playing through the pedal, as the USB connection may generate noise when connected to the computer.

Addressing the Need for Bluetooth Connectivity with UA Console

Many users have expressed interest in directly routing audio from the UA Console to Bluetooth headphones or speakers. While the UA Console itself does not natively support Bluetooth audio output, there are alternative solutions.

Workaround 1: Bluetooth Transmitter

One common workaround involves using a Bluetooth transmitter connected to one of the Apollo's headphone jacks.

  • Bluetooth Transmitter: Purchase a Bluetooth transmitter that supports audio connectivity via a 1/4" or 3.5mm jack.
  • Connection: Plug the transmitter into the headphone jack of your Apollo interface.
  • Pairing: Pair your Bluetooth headphones or speakers with the transmitter.

This method effectively streams audio from the Apollo's output to your Bluetooth device.

Bluetooth Transmitter Features

  • Connect Hub: Use the Connect Hub in Bluetooth transmitter (TX) mode to stream clear, distortion-free digital sound wirelessly from TVs and other devices to Bluetooth headphones or speakers.
  • Volume Boost: The Connect Hub also introduces a VOLUME BOOST feature for RCA/analog audio connections, which can help make the audio output of older TVs louder.
  • Universal Compatibility: Features both analog and digital audio connections for universal compatibility with old and new TVs and other devices.
  • Voice-Assisted Setup: Built-in status display and speaker provide the Connect Hub with a simplified, voice-assisted setup process.
  • Warranty: The Connect Hub has a 1 year warranty.
  • Power Source: The Connect Hub must be plugged in to a power source for use. You can use a wall adapter, the USB port on your TV, or any other powered USB port.

Additional Bluetooth Audio Solutions

Beyond the basic transmitter setup, other devices can facilitate Bluetooth audio streaming from various sources.

Google Home as a Bluetooth Speaker

Google Home devices can be used as Bluetooth speakers, providing another avenue for wireless audio connectivity.

  • Pairing Mode: Put the Google Home in pairing mode by saying “Ok Google, pairing mode”. You can also do this by navigating to Menu -> Devices -> (Google Home device) -> Settings -> Paired Bluetooth Devices -> Enable Pairing Mode in the Google Home app.
  • Connect Hub Pairing: Once the Google Home is in pairing mode, put the Connect Hub in pairing mode by pressing and holding the Bluetooth button.

Troubleshooting UAD Connectivity Issues

When using UA devices, you may encounter connectivity issues. Here are some troubleshooting steps:

  • Device Connection: First check that your device(s) are fully connected and powered on.
  • macOS Configuration: macOS requires manual configuration steps to enable UAD software.
  • Compatibility: If you're connecting your UAD device(s) to your computer for the first time and see the "No Devices Found" text, first check to make sure that your computer is compatible with the UAD device(s) that you're using.
  • Direct Connection: Please connect your interface directly to your computer. It is required that every UA Thunderbolt device is daisy-chained from a single Thunderbolt port.
  • Thunderbolt Cable: If you are using Thunderbolt 2 devices, the Thunderbolt logo on the Thunderbolt cable must be face up when plugged into both the UAD device and the computer.
  • Software Reinstallation: A full uninstall of the UAD software will remove all UAD applications, drivers, preference files, etc., from your computer so you can reinstall the software like new. This can resolve "No Devices Found" and other issues.
  • Cable Replacement: If you're still experiencing issues after going through the troubleshooting steps above, we recommend replacing your data cable (FireWire, Thunderbolt, or USB) with a new one, or with one that you have confirmed as working by testing it with another device.
