Mastering Crucio in Hogwarts Legacy: A Comprehensive Guide

Crucio, also known as the Cruciatus Curse, stands as one of the most formidable and controversial spells in the world of Hogwarts Legacy. As one of the three Unforgivable Curses, alongside Avada Kedavra and Imperio, Crucio inflicts unspeakable pain upon its target, making it a powerful but ethically questionable tool in combat. This guide will delve into the intricacies of acquiring, utilizing, and upgrading Crucio, providing players with a comprehensive understanding of this dark art.

Understanding Crucio

Crucio, derived from the Latin word for "cross," a chilling reference to crucifixion, embodies the essence of torture. In the Harry Potter lore, the Cruciatus Curse inflicts intense, excruciating pain, potentially leading to insanity if prolonged. Within Hogwarts Legacy, casting Crucio on a living target causes them to writhe and cry out in agony, hindering their attacks and inflicting damage over time. As with all Unforgivable Curses in the game, Crucio can only be cast upon hostile targets.

Acquiring the Cruciatus Curse

To unlock Crucio in Hogwarts Legacy, players must progress through the Sebastian Sallow quest line, specifically the quest titled "In the Shadow of the Study," which becomes available around Level 16 after completing the "In the Shadow of the Bloodline" quest. This quest involves venturing into Slytherin's Scriptorium with Sebastian and Ominis Gaunt in search of information related to Noctua Gaunt.

The Slytherin Scriptorium

  1. Meeting Sebastian: Begin by meeting Sebastian outside the Slytherin common room.
  2. Convincing Ominis: Locate Ominis and persuade him to reveal the location of the Scriptorium. Despite his aversion to the Dark Arts, he doesn't require much convincing.
  3. Unlocking the Hidden Door: Ominis reveals a hidden door in the corridor leading to the Scriptorium. To unlock it, cast Confringo at the three unlit braziers nearby. Two braziers are directly in front of Ominis, and one is down the corridor to the right.
  4. Exploring the Passages: Descend the stairs into a hallway. Repair the broken wall decoration on the left using Reparo and collect the note from Ominis' Aunt Noctua, Noctua Gaunt. There are 5 notes to collect in the passages leading up to the Scriptorium.
  5. Parselmouth Revelation: After repairing the wall, Ominis reveals his ability to speak Parselmouth (snake language).

Navigating the Slytherin Lock Puzzles

The next area presents a series of Slytherin Lock puzzles that must be solved to progress:

  1. First Door: Locate the Slytherin Lock next to the first door, adorned with a circular symbol and an infinity loop. Interact with the lock and match the symbols displayed on the door within the time limit.
  2. Second Door: Find the second door around the corner, marked with a devil-like symbol and a z-shape. The corresponding lock is behind a half-opened gate that requires crouching to access. Input the correct symbols to open the door. Use Lumos to see the symbols more clearly.
  3. Third Door: Head through the second door to find a third door with an alpha symbol (α) and a scratched-up triangle symbol. The lock for this door is located back through the first door you unlocked.

The Crucial Decision

After passing through the third door, the door abruptly closes, trapping you, Sebastian, and Ominis. Sebastian reveals that using Crucio is necessary to open the door. This is where you will be faced with a choice:

  1. Convincing Ominis: Speak to Ominis to convince him to use the curse.
  2. Learning Crucio: Sebastian offers to teach you the Cruciatus Curse. You must decide whether to learn the curse and whether you or Sebastian should cast it.

The Choices

  • "Very well." (Choosing not to learn the Cruciatus Curse): Selecting this option allows you to avoid learning the Unforgivable Curse and abstain from using the Dark Arts.
  • "I want to learn the Cruciatus Curse. But you must cast it on me.": Selecting this option will have Sebastian cast Crucio on you.
  • "Teach me the Cruciatus Curse and I'll cast it on you.": Selecting this option will have you cast Crucio on Sebastian.

Consequences

The primary decision lies in whether to learn the spell at all. There is no significant difference in the quest or story based on whether you cast Crucio on Sebastian or he casts it on you. If Sebastian casts Crucio on you, your health points will be temporarily reduced. However, you can restore your health by saving and reloading your game.

Exploring the Scriptorium

Once the door is opened, enter the Scriptorium, where you can find gear chests and sacks using Revelio. Locate Slytherin's Spellbook beneath the large snake head and deliver it to Sebastian in the small study area upstairs. Exit the Scriptorium through the door at the back of the room after your conversation with Sebastian.

Using Crucio in Combat

Crucio inflicts damage over time, causing enemies to writhe in pain and hindering their attacks. It is particularly effective against single targets, providing both damage and crowd control. However, Crucio cannot be cast without enemies around. If you try to cast it without any enemies around, your wand will spark and the spell will not go through.

Upgrading Crucio

Talent points can be spent to enhance Crucio's effectiveness:

  • Crucio Curse: This upgrade guarantees that an enemy hit with Crucio will be cursed. Cursed enemies, indicated by a bright green "X," take increased damage from all sources. When striking an enemy with Crucio, a projectile is released upon impact that targets and curses another nearby enemy at random.

The Other Unforgivable Curses

Hogwarts Legacy also features the other two Unforgivable Curses:

  • Imperio: Allows players to take control of enemies, turning them into temporary allies.
  • Avada Kedavra: The Killing Curse, instantly eliminating most enemies.

Morality and Consequences

Despite the severity of using Unforgivable Curses in the Harry Potter lore, Hogwarts Legacy does not impose any in-game punishments for using Crucio or the other Unforgivable Curses, even in front of teachers. This absence of consequences allows players to explore the darker aspects of magic without fear of reprisal.

Learning Crucio After the Quest

If you choose not to learn Crucio during the "In the Shadow of the Study" quest, you can still learn it from Sebastian by talking to him at the Undercroft at any time after completing the quest. I think you can talk to him at the undercroft to learn it if you missed it.
