Navigating Hunter Education Requirements in Colorado

Colorado's stunning landscapes and diverse wildlife offer incredible hunting opportunities. However, to ensure safety, ethical hunting practices, and the conservation of wildlife, Colorado requires hunter education for many individuals. This article outlines the requirements for hunter education in Colorado, detailing the available options, who needs it, and other important information to help you prepare for a successful and responsible hunting experience.

Who Needs Hunter Education in Colorado?

Colorado law mandates that anyone born on or after January 1, 1949, must complete an approved hunter education course before they can purchase a hunting license. This regulation ensures that all hunters have a foundational understanding of safe firearm handling, hunting ethics, wildlife management, and relevant regulations.

Options for Completing Hunter Education

Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) offers two primary options for fulfilling the hunter education requirement:

  1. Classroom Course: These in-person classes involve lectures, videos, hands-on activities, a written test, and a live-fire exercise. Students must demonstrate their understanding of the course material, pass the exam, and exhibit safe firearm handling skills. The classroom course requires a minimum of ten hours of instruction and may cost up to $10, depending on the chosen course. Colorado Parks and Wildlife supplies the rifles and ammunition for the live fire exercise; personal firearms cannot be used.

  2. Online Course and Classroom Conclusion Class (Hybrid Option): This blended approach allows students to complete a portion of the course online at their own pace and then finalize the certification process with an in-person Classroom Conclusion class. Hunter-Ed is an approved online hunter education provider for the CPW.

Hunter Education in Other States

Colorado typically recognizes hunter education certifications from other states, provinces, or countries that meet official IHEA-USA requirements. Likewise, states, provinces, and other countries that have mandatory hunter education requirements will accept the Colorado Hunter Education Certificate.

Exceptions to Hunter Education Requirements

Individuals born on or prior to August 1, 1977 must provide evidence of completing a hunter education course before they can purchase a hunting license. Instead of passing the hunter education course, hunters can buy a “Supervision Required” license if they hunt with a mentor 21-years or older, and who buys a hunting license after completing the Hunters Education course.
