Scholarship Details for the 2026/2027 Academic Year

Applications are currently being accepted for the Hyundai Motor Group Scholarship 2026/2027. Starting in the first half of 2025, the Hyundai Motor Group Scholarship will be offered annually to five master’s and doctoral students coming to SOAS from Africa. The scholarship provides comprehensive financial support to cover tuition fees and living expenses, allowing recipients to focus on their studies and research. Scholars will receive transformational support towards their tuition and living expenses.

Master's Award: The value of the 2026/27 master’s award is £27,730 from which tuition fees will be paid in full. If the tuition fee charge is less, the difference will be provided as a stipend.

PhD Award: The PhD award will cover tuition fees for three years of full-time study as well as the tuition fee for writing up in a 4th year. An annual stipend (£22,780 in 2026/27) will be provided each year and paid in termly instalments.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the Hyundai Motor Group Scholarship, applicants must meet specific academic and language requirements.

Academic Requirements:

  • MA Scholarship: Applicants for the MA scholarship must possess or expect to be awarded an international equivalent to a first-class honours degree from a UK university. Applicants with a non-UK degree must be in the top rank as evidenced by references and transcripts.
  • MPhil/PhD Scholarship: Applicants for the MPhil/PhD scholarship must possess or expect to be awarded with an international equivalent to a master’s degree with distinction from a UK university. Applicants with a non-UK master’s degree must be in the top rank as evidenced by references and transcripts.

Additional Requirements:

  • Scholarship applicants must have applied to SOAS but are not required to have received an offer of admission by the scholarship deadline.
  • Applicants must meet the English language condition of their offer of admission to study at SOAS, if applicable.

How to Apply

The application process for the Hyundai Motor Group Scholarship involves submitting a complete application for admission to SOAS and a separate scholarship application.

Application Process:

  1. Apply for a relevant Master's or PhD program at SOAS University of London. Candidates must submit a complete application of their programme as soon as possible and then submit an application for this scholarship in order to be considered. Note that complete applications for admissions can take up to 4 weeks to be considered by the department, although this duration can vary depending on the time of the year.
  2. Apply for the Hyundai Motor Group Scholarship via the admissions portal.
  3. Ensure that all required documents, including transcripts and references, are submitted to support your application.

Application Deadline: Apply for the scholarship by 12 noon (UK local time) on 25 April 2026.

The assessment of your application will be based on the information provided in your scholarship application and in your online application for admission.

Networking Events and Seminars: Scholarship recipients will be invited to participate in various networking events and seminars hosted by the donor during and after their studies. The Group will invite scholarship recipients to participate in various networking events and seminars hosted by the Group after completing their studies.

Alumni Network: They will also be able to participate in academic and networking activities as alumni of the Hyundai Motor Group Scholarship. This network and collaboration model between the Group and the scholars is designed to support this next generation of changemakers beyond their studies as they apply their expertise to careers across the African continent.

Junior Internship Program: In addition, the Group is set to launch the Junior Internship Program for undergraduate and master’s students from Africa at SOAS.
