Navigating the Digital Landscape: Exploring Idaho Digital Learning Portal Resources
The Idaho Digital Learning Alliance (IDLA) was created in 2002 to provide “…choice, accessibility, flexibility, quality and equity in curricular offerings for students in this state.” As part of its mission, IDLA is proud to provide all students across Idaho with multiple pathways to their chosen college and career. In fulfilling this mission, the IDLA has developed a variety of resources, including digital learning portals, to support students, parents, and educators in navigating the increasingly digital educational landscape.
The Genesis of Digital Learning Portals
As educational resources have begun to migrate into the digital format, students taking online classes are presented with the challenge of managing multiple passwords and accessing various online resources. Not only do they have district-assigned accounts, but they also have classes to access which have numerous resources that may require password protection. Feeling the need to remove this obstacle, Idaho Digital Learning has created digital learning portals.
These custom school portals offer students the opportunity to access their online courses, resources, and more in a single easy-to-use location while allowing schools local control over their student’s online experience. Initially designed for districts and schools, the portal vision has since grown into other educational opportunities throughout Idaho. Due to the success of these portals, Idaho Digital Learning envisions the Parent Resource Center.
Benefits of IDLA Digital Learning Portals
IDLA courses provide a teacher and a principal who can help you. Don’t forget that you have several adults ready to support you and your learning.
- Streamlined Access: The portals eliminate the need for students to remember multiple passwords and navigate different platforms.
- Centralized Resources: All online courses, learning materials, and other essential resources are available in one convenient location.
- Local Control: Schools retain control over their students’ online experience, ensuring alignment with local policies and curriculum.
- Enhanced User Experience: The easy-to-use interface simplifies the online learning process for students of all ages and skill levels.
Resources within the IDLA Digital Learning Ecosystem
Beyond the digital learning portals, IDLA provides access to a wide array of resources designed to support student success. These resources cater to various aspects of education, from college and career readiness to financial aid and skill development.

- Scholarship Opportunities: Next Steps Idaho curates a thorough list of scholarship opportunities available to students seeking collegiate and career technical postsecondary education.
- Idaho LAUNCH: Idaho LAUNCH offers high school seniors a one-time opportunity to have 80% - up to $8,000 - of their tuition and fees paid for at an eligible institution. Students must enroll in apprenticeships, job training, community college, and university programs that lead to in-demand careers.
- Apply Idaho: Apply Idaho is a free, common application platform for up to 10 in-state colleges. Open October through June, this application is available to current-year Idaho high school seniors.

Nearly all colleges and career schools use the FAFSA to determine how much aid to offer each student. Financial aid funds are disbursed along a sliding scale of need and merit; the FAFSA is the most comprehensive and secure method of confirming a student’s position on that scale.
Career Technical Education (CTE)
- Workforce Readiness and CTE Diploma: To acknowledge that CTE programs enhance students’ high school experience and help prepare them for the demands of today’s employers regardless of their path, the 2021 Idaho State Legislature created the Workforce Readiness and CTE Diploma.
- Idaho Division of Career Technical Education (IDCTE): The Idaho Division of Career Technical Education (IDCTE) works to prepare Idaho youth and adults for high-skill, in-demand careers. Resources for students include Transition Coordinators - advisors who help students find the appropriate postsecondary CTE program - and information about student organizations like FFA, DECA, and BPA.
IDLA Course Information and Support
- Course Catalog and Descriptions: Review the course catalog and check out the course descriptions to learn more about each course. You will also want to consider if online learning is right for you.
- Site Coordinators: Each school that uses IDLA has at least one appointed site coordinator who will guide you and your parents or guardians through the IDLA registration process. The site coordinator may ask you to fill out a paper or online form to begin the registration process. You’ll work with your school’s site coordinator and/or counselors to figure out which course and semester to register for.
- Online Orientation: Students who are new to IDLA or who are enrolling in a program for the first time will need to complete an online orientation course. This is a one-time prerequisite for all IDLA courses and will take approximately two hours to complete. Unlike our regular courses, orientation is not taught by a teacher. Instead, you’ll guide yourself through an introduction to the skills you’ll need to navigate the learning management system (LMS). You are required to independently complete your orientation before the term begins. If you don’t, you will be dropped from your courses.
Embracing Innovation: AI and the Future of Learning
In a previous IDLA blog, Ryan Gravette shared the importance of using AI to “augment the human process.” AI is best used to support humans, not replace them. At IDLA, we believe AI will be a tool available to all of this generation’s students throughout their working careers.
One of the most interesting new tools I know is NotebookLM by Google. One of the fun parts of my job is the opportunity to play with (I mean explore) new technology tools.
The Importance of Human Connection
Critical learning components include a strong curriculum, research-based instructional practices, and an environment that supports learners. One often overlooked critical component of learning is relationships. A healthy, supportive relationship with a caring adult is a success factor for all learners. Researchers studied foster youth who successfully transitioned from high school to college.
